Number of Christmas Light Bulbs Outside

We went riding and looking at the many lighted displays of neighborhood homes, buildings, and other decorations around the city and on the big military base. There were some highlighted on the internet in other cities and states across the USA, which inspired us to take our grand daughter and see what our city had to offer on display.   Some appeared to me that it must have taken weeks to complete, with the help of a blue print, to figure out where everything goes. The amazing part is how in

Iraqi Elections are Completed Finally

Sitting here at the front door of Ft Hood, watching troops go to Iraq, including my only son, and nephews, knowing they all don't come back alive or without loss of limbs or eyesight, is very hard for me this time of year. A blog is where you can record your thoughts. Insidently, my first wife, and son's mother passed in 1998, December was her birth month.   We'll probably miss Saddam once Bush finally hang him. Bush, since before April 9, 2003, now admitting he invaded Iraq with false info,

Rumor Has It.... The Movie

During the holidays, when you run out of things to do, get depressed, or what ever, go to the movies. Starting christmas day in theaters everywhere, The movie, "Rumor has It," starring Jennifer Annison, is a must see.   It may shed some light on the school teachers that somehow, get involved in affairs with younger students. Ofcourse, it has another angle about family, mother, grandmother and daughter with a younger man. Plus, it gets you out of the house at a time when you can mingle with pe

More BLOGS than usual in one day

I was going to blog, now I forgot what it was about. So much for brain loss, I really lost my thoughts. I'll go read the evening paper, that should produce some thoughts. Maybe I'll go shopping at wal-mart, no, no, in the mall, that way I don't have to spend any money. I can window shop all the stores on my scooter, last stop, cookie shop, I'll be tuckered out, hungry and thirsty.   After Christmas sale, I'll know what to buy or not to buy, depending on what I see others bring back to that st

Where's the Holiday Good News?

Where is the holiday good news? This has been, so far, one of the worse year ending years I can remember in a long time.   I go to bed last night, a man in california is scheduled for execution just after midnight.   I awake this morning, a New Jersey town has a giant apartment building fire from a gas explosion.   I just read Jean's blog, Goals and Goulish things, she has a full schedule, seems like a full week of caregiver items to accomplish on achey knees and more snow coming. be ca

World News with many Unknowns

Since, as a stroke survivor, I have slowed down and able to listen, watch, and read more of what's happening around this world. There are some interesting stories lately that leaves me saying, duh!! I'm glad and proud, it tells me my damaged brain is still useful and recovering.   The death of former Sen. Eugene McCarthy, who died in his sleep at an assisted living home, where HE HAD LIVED FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS, according to his son, Michael.   At the age of 89, I would think he owned a

Nation's life expectancy hits all-time high

Can you believe good news for a change? I just read that deaths from heart disease, cancer and STROKE, the nation's three leading killers, all dropped in 2003.They were down between 2 and 5 percent.   The all-time high is 77.6 years, up from 77.3 the year before. In 1990. life expectancy was 75.4. Still, health officials are trying to draw attention to unhealthy behavior, such as smoking. This year, they chose to break out data on people 55 to 64. That's quite a few of us here.   I suppose

Going On My Second Year as a Survivor

Well, well, well, two years are upon me at last. My stroke was 15 Jan 2004. I can't help but to think about that day. My hopes are to have a great 2006 year, continue to recover and stay healthy for a change.   My wishes are for all my fellow members here and their families to stay safe, be careful and enjoy next year to the fullest. I would love to log in to strokenet one morning and read where a member has hit the lottery.   My hopes are that all of us here can really get by without any

Historical Day Dec 7, 2005

Just as I was about to blog, the news flash on ABC, stated a man just got shot aboard a flight in Miami, Fl, by an air marshall, first time in history of the air marshall service. About 1:45 CT. History is always being made.   Anyway dec 7, 1941, 64 years ago, my age. The day America changed forever. A dozing United States abruptly and violently began its transformation into a global superpower. The Japanese navy launched a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. There was national outrage at the Japane

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Is it correct to say or wish a merry christmas anymore?? I ask that question, cause here lately, I see the usual ads in the daily and sunday papers, wishing a "happy holiday season".   I remember wishing a "merry christmas and a happy new year" in newspapers, cards, letters and people saying it to each other, from many years ago.   Even Charlie Brown and Lucy, the peanuts cartoon, still aire a Christmas show on TV, here in the US.   Anyway, Merry Christmas to those who believe, along wi

Heavenly Humor For Year's End

Thought I'd get off the back pages of the Blogs to start a new year off sorta up front.   Mendel the Tailor   There was a tailor named Mendel and he was worried about his business. Mendel was down to his last $50 and was torn between buying a sign and getting food for his family during the Christmas holidays.   Mendel decided to pray. "Dear God," he said, "I don't know what to do. If I buy a sign it may bring in business, but I need to buy groceri

Stroke Clubs/What Is A Stroke Club

I thought I would make this Blog since there are so many New Members seeking support clubs in their hometowns and vicinities. Then the lack of having someplace to gather information they want from those having experienced strokes.   A stroke club is a community organization formed by and for stroke survivors, their family members, caregivers and friends. Stroke families help stroke families learn more about stroke and help survivors rebound.   (By that same token, that's what we have here

Portable Power when Power Fails Us

Reading a comment on a Blog reminded me how important electrical power is to us survivors that communicate by way of the computer. I'm going to make plans to purchase a mid-size generator real soon. Winter is coming, even in Texas, and we could have power outages for extended periods of times.   I can't imagine me without access to the internet. Talk about depression, boy, I would go crazy. Ofcourse, if the cable company goes down, I'm out of luck, but they usually are back up in a matter of

Congratulations To Steve Mallory

Well I have been long enough to be two people, 10 pinman and now Scooterman, but I will always be Fred.   As Fred the Scooterman, I wanted to say my very big congratulations to Steve Mallory for a vision he had in forming a web site that so many have come to express themselves. We have this day over 4000 members. That's a mile stone in my mind ( Lost some brain cells), worthy of enjoying being a part of history.   I try to recognize all accomplishments, I know how I felt when I got my deg

Learning to Count

I guess I must have gotten a good nights rest. It came to mind that my counting the months since my stroke was incorrect. I had been saying "I'm going on 19 months this month (Oct) but that's off by two months. I think I was counting a year as 10 months. Maybe my elevator wasn't going to the top floor. Oh well.   My stroke was 15 Jan 2004, so 15 Jan 2005 makes one year, 12 months. From Jan 2005 until 15 Oct 2005 makes 9 months more. 9 + 12 has to = 21, am I correct? So I stand corrected and h

What else can we give up

More thoughts from a recovering brain!! What else will be asked to give up??   Early on, and some time ago, the question came up, how could God let something like this happen? The attack on WTC, Hurricanes in Florida last year, this year, then hurricane and flooding in New Orleans and in Texas.   Let's not forget the invasion of Iraq by US forces and the almost 2000 US lives lost as a result. What about the lives of other forces and those countrymen killed while we try to change their life

Non Medical Thoughts In My Mind

I've been trying to exercise my mind lately. Just trying to think better, more and constructive. What comes to mind is the rehab therapists saying if you don't use it you loose it. I believe that. Like learning to walk initially. They teach to hike your hip to raise your leg and foot.   I'm back in therapy now(16 visits so far)and I'm learning to bend the knee, raise the foot let the heel hit first, come on thru with the strong hip and leg. It feels great doing it that way.   Now, I'd be t

Modern Day Inventions

Can you just imagine how we ever got along without some of these inventions like the personal computer and electricity. With hurricanes and other natural disasters in certain regions, I'm surprised every household doesn't have a portable generator available when the power is out.   From a straw broom and dust pan to remote vaccum. Free TV with your own antenna on the roof to digital play and pay to see anything. Its not cheap. What about the price of TV's today. We are going to need one to se

Good Ol' Days and Times

We know we are getting better when we can think back how we used to be or what we used to do or better still what we did it with. Some people refer to those times and things as the good old days.   I'm coming from the time of about 1941, my birth year from a woman 43 years old, my mother. To start with she was born in 1898, boy was that a long time ago. When I had my stroke January 2004, my mind would not focus in that direction, now I can tell the difference. Thats improvement in memory. I

Rant, Rant, and Rant some more

Here I am this time ranting and ranting some more. Probably still off the top of my head.   I want to thank my caregiving wife for all she has gone thru in my recovery for the past 18 months. We have both come a long, long way from stroke patient to stroke survivor. From working wife, mother and friend to unemployed wife, friend still and caregiver. That's a journey in itself, all by it self.   "Thank You" has become my 2 words of choice lately. People, male and female, even small children

Off the Top of My Head

Well this is off the top of my head. Remember how sometimes you talk to yourself? Then somebody ask what did you say, you answer nothing I was talking to myself. Then they say well don't answer, you will go crazy.   I am envoking the 1st amendment here. Nothing is factual in research, like I said its off the top of my head. That ain't very deep. I said RANT because I have to get it out of my system today. Infact I missed church this morning, but I am going this evening to a program for the me

Caregivers and survivors

CAREGIVING is often taken for granted. I just read a post by Jyee24 about caring for her dad from rehab to nursing home to home again. Her mom is not able to care for him. They are both the same age.   Scolars, teachers and educators please excuse the mispellings and improper english usage. I'm writing this as it comes to mind for my feelings for each caregiver including my wife. She quit her job to care for me. I'M VERY THANKFUL.   I reached another milestone today with her caring and a b

Report Post rehab

Well as fate would have it, the first day I was due to get POOL therapy, they called to say the entire building is flooded. Somebody left the water running in the pool the nite before. Makes me wonder if I'm suppose to get water therapy which I had requested.   A week passed for them cleaning up, pulling up carpet, base boards, sheetrock pieces everywhere, records and papers drying out that was on the floor. Big fans going to help dry the place up. Mind you the pool is located in the very bac

More rehab

Well, I started my 2nd time around with rehab for about 12 visits of PT only. They wouldn't approve OT but he said he would include some hand and arm movements. That was nice of him.   Two days a week, one on land, one in pool. Already he got me walking without my cane and more balance with weak side. One thing made sense to me. Instead of lifting with your hip muscles like we learned early on, try bending your knee, making the knee raise your foot trying to put it down without looking. That
