YO HO - YO HO it's a shopping we will go

Our trip to Grand Forks was alittle hectic at first, just trying to get out of the city was a chore. First I had to double check that we had packed everything needed, and make sure I was at Kath's work around 4PM., after picking her up we went and picked up her sister. The trip to the border was uneventfull, but the security was really tight at the border, luckily we had taken our passports or we might still be waiting in line.   We had booked the Holiday Inn Express for two nights. I don't w

WOW ,was yesterday a great day

Well yesterday was one of the best days I've had post stroke. I felt like my old self (pre-stroke) except for the limp . I took Kath to work, went to Canadian tire for a part, visited a friend, took the car to be winterized, did some shopping, did some things around the apartment, picked up Kath after work, and went out for supper. Well today I'm paying for my good day, thank god I'm not bedridden like I was a month ago (thanks to naproxin) you'd think I'd learn to slow down alittle, but then

Will I never learn?

We went down to Grand Forks ND, last weekend (actually it was thursday and came back saturday afternoon). We shopped, and shopped, and ate, and shopped, slept, ate, shopped. Wednesday I did all the laundry, last night I wasn't up to snuf, and today I'm paying for my whirlwind week. This happened the last time we went down there (which was last September) and I guess that I forgot. I thought that I was smarter than this considering I'm almost 2yrs. post stroke, obviously I'm not.

We're moved but..............

Well the move went good, but we were up at 6AM on moving day trying to look after all the little things we'd forgotten. Mover showed up at 9:30AM, he should've been there at 8:30AM. The Resident managers flunkys started to tell me that we only had two hours, and if the mover was late then another tenant's movers were needing the elevator. Well they shutup when I said "how many is that now that have moved out since May ..30?" Movers finally showed (they were having breakfast of all things) saw

Was thinking the other day, ya ya I'm deep ;-)

I was thinking about my stroke the other day, and how I wasn't really scared while it was happening. I know that's a strange thing to say but it's true. Sitting in my office at work having supper while my wife while the stroke onset was happening (and I wasn't scared) while I felt my body starting to shut down. I was thinking just how much this was going to scare Kathleen when I ask her to take me to the hospital ( she knows I hate hospitals). According to her I was quiet calm, wanting to lock u

Updates to family while I was in Hospital

It seems my wife was updating the family while I was in the hospital. Both sides of the family were helping us fix up the house to sell, cleaning up, and helping to pack up before we sold it. Two months of emails, I thought we'd lost them, but my sister in law had saved them all, and sent them back to Kath after our computer crashed. Upon finding them, and reading what went on while I was on my back brought a tear to my eye, so that's why I have decided to share them with you. I'll just post

Two Years !!

Well I'm certainly slipping up by not mentioning that as of June 22nd. I'm offically Two years post stroke. It's been a tough two years and don't know if I would of made it without Kath, Daniel and Marli, the extended family, and of course my other extended family here at Strokenet. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Just because I've hit this milestone doesen't mean that I 'll be slacking on my inhome rehab ( Kath says the whip is a great motivator) :yikes: What I've learned in

Two days :)

It's -22C here this morning   It seems Kath had stuffed some empty pill bottles away awhile ago, she had forgot and we found them last night, so it looks like we won't have to take the whole pharmacy with us Packed a bunch last night, we'll finish up tommorrow. Hopefully leaving saturday morning free so that we can take our time having showers and then getting to the airport by noon. Happy Valentines Day everyone, stay healthy. I'll take lots of pictures.

The suns shining

Well here I am again, it's been almost five years since my bout with stroke and for the most part I've won the battle. It's hard to remember what life was like before my stroke, but to anyone reading this I can tell you that if you work hard at rehab things will get better. I'm sitting here typing, and since 2006 I'm back driving, I go shopping, infact anything I want just alittle slower is all Daniel and Jenn are expecting their little girl Ava Kathleen any day, if Jenn hasn't given birth by

The Story after the Interview with JOHANNA BENNETT of the Wall Street Journal

Health Matters SEPTEMBER 13, 2008 Many fail to spot symptoms of stroke; these aids can help By JOHANNA BENNETT     Stewart Pickell was one day shy of his 56th birthday when he felt lightheaded.   It was a hot June morning, and he had just left an air-conditioned hair salon. So Mr. Pickell went about his day. But later, he fell down on his front steps when his right foot briefly went numb. At work that night, Mr. Pickell, then the manager of the gym used by Canada's national basketbal

The Cruise

Febuary 16th. we got on the plane and headed to Miami with a stop over in Chicago, nothing interesting just a plane ride. We got to Miami at 11PM, sat in the airport for over an hour waiting for the shuttle from our hotel, and then he expected a tip! Let me tell you if we wern't so tired the four of us would of went looking for another hotel, it was awful, dirty and Dan found blood on the comforter. The next day we went to the port of Miami, the ships are huge.   At 4PM we started our j

So my brother tells me

Well my brother dropped a bombshell on me yesterday. He told me that he thinks he had a stroke about two weeks ago as he came out of a bar. He said that his whole left side went numb and he fell down as he was exiting the bar, he said that he tried to get back up but fell again. A taxi driver came to his rescue, and took him home. I asked why he didn't go to the hospital, he said that he had been drinking and they might think he's just drunk. Said it took two days to clear up, and he was fine.

She Graduated !!!

It's -25 here right now, and it's been a cold and busy week. I hurt myself getting in the car after someone parked too close to the drivers side, even though I was parked in a handicap parking spot with my sign showing. You'd think people would be smarter, or am I hoping for too much? I still hurt (strained muscle) even though it's been since Saturday, but it seems to be getting better.   The big news is that my neice Joanna graduated from depot, she's now a full RCMP officer, and Daniel

Reunion and the trip to the states

Well we had so much fun at my Mom's side of the familys' reunion. There were family I haven't seen since I was 8 years old (which is quite awhile) :dribble: Uncles and Aunts were everywhere, my cousins Judy, Pam and Sue just wouldn't stop hugging me, I used to live with them when I was 16 (they're all in their 40's now). My uncle tom started a food fight, of which he got the worst. My brother who I don't see often came for the reunion as he was only at Clear lake (about 65 miles away), it was

Rehab, I'm beat :)

It's going to be a short entry today.   Well I just spent two hours at rehab and I'm wiped out. I wasn't going to go today, just didn't feel great but forced myself to go. I needed to get a good workout., and I got it   Some balance exercises, weights, walking in the bars, then side stepover exercises, backward walking, the KAT, arm exercises, more weights, treadmill 1 km., more arm exercises, legover back lifts, leglifts from floor, and to top it all off the wobble board. God just typi

Please No more..

Well here I am back at my blog, back acting up again making it hard to walk. God what am I going to do at 70... ten years from now, will I be crippled and in a chair for good? I'm hoping it's just the weather changing, come on Summer Dan's got a new girlfriend, she's a cutey, Kath and I are very glad he's started to date again, he was in so much pain when Marli left last boxing day.   Well it's only 20 months and Kaths done, retired, then what, a cruise,a trip, or vegetation? I'm trying to g

OT and Physio when will they boot me

Well OT told me the other day that because I'm doing so well they may have to release me, I hope not ): I feel that I'm not ready to go yet. I talked to Tara my OT trainer ( not Sue my actual OT person) about this, told her I wasn't ready, and if they decided to boot me could I comeback say once a month for a workout and to access my progress. She told me not to worry (don't exactually know what that meant), after all it's Sue's call.   Shelly my Physio said there's no way she was going to

On the road again :)

Well I'm on the road again I dropped my wife off at her work and then went to my old workplace for a visit. My wife thought that the traffic might be a problem for me (she was worried and tried not let me see) as it was my first time out by myself with the car, but I hardly noticed it. She did though made sure I took the cell just incase I need some help, or she wanted to get a hold of me, as if I didn't know she would be checking on me   I made sure to pick up some donuts from Tim Hortons,

OFF We Go Again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here it is October 24, and in two days we're off to Grand Forks for the weekend again (last one)before the snow flys, we're taking Kath's sister Judy with us to shop. You know, it's real easy to convert airmiles to priority points, converted a bunch and booked the executive suite at the Holiday Inn Express for the weekend I got some new tires for the front of the car here so don't need to look for them there, just have a great time (yah hoo) Halloween is almost here, then Christmas, and t

Not a terrific week

Well I thought I'd straighten up the computer room on Monday, moved and stacked boxes until the room looked presentable. Tuesday morning I couldn't get out of bed, I had yanked my back out. I spent Tuesday and Wednesday flat on my back, Kath had to go to work and wasn't happy about leaving me alone. Thursday started to feel a little better, was able to shuffle around, did some laundry. Friday morning (today), around 4AM I had something in my lower back go snap (woke me from a dead sleep) and h

My stroke, how it happened

June 22 (day before my birthday) my day started at 7:30 AM, I took my wife to work, and then went for breakfast. Later I went shopping, and then went and had my hair cut. When I came out of the shop I remember that I felt a strange tingling on the top of my head, well it was 29C and I thought it was just because I had just come from air conditioning (if I'd only known).   I went to the grocery store and did some shopping, and then went home to mow the grass and put the grocerie

My Interviw with the Wall Street Journal

I'm so happy that my interview with Johanna Bennett a writer for the Wall Street Journal is going to be the lead to a story about stroke. The story will only be about 1000 words, but it will focus on people not reckonizing the signs of stroke until it's too late. I've never done anything like this and was nervous, it all went well so I'm looking forward to reading the whole story

My Eight Year Anniversary - Today June 22

Well eight years have passed, some good, some not so. But for the most part it has been a learning experience, learning that there are some things I can still do and some I can't. I use my cane sparingly, only take it when going out. I've got 85% use of my right arm back , the leg has a limp but I can live with it. I never thought I'd see my son happy again, nor did I ever expect I'd be here to see my grand daughter grow up, she's 3 yrs right now.   So don't believe it when someone tells you

Moving's begging to be sooo much fun

Well I'm going to tie up a few things Monday morning for the move, and get the new apartment keys. I'm sitting at a stop sign, look both ways twice and "clunk" some guy on a bicycle "on the sidewalk" runs into me as I turn. I get out, he's OK, but his bike isn't, I squashed the front wheel up good. I asked him what he was doing on the sidewalk as it's illegal, and that he could of been killed shooting across the walkway on his bike "supposed to walk it across". Now he's not a kid (around 18-19
