I had a date!
Most of you know the difficulty Bruce and I have had here. The changes in the caregivers and then the changes in the times.
Bruce is a morning person. Up with the birds and ready to go. By 4pm he is tired, regardless of what he did that day, so my working during the daytime is tough on him. He might ask the caregivers to take him for a ride, but mostly just sits with the TV until lunch and nap.
Last week was a nightmare for both of us and when I realized that this week was to be the same, reviewed with him the things on the list that we could do when I got home, depending on the weather. This morning when I asked him what his plans were for the day, he said "I want to go to dinner with you." I gave him his pile of coupons and went off to work. I fully expected that he would say he was too tired. He found three coupons. And weather was hot, but beautiful. I popped him out of bed from nap.
Again, we are still dealing with incontinence with the caregivers, but he said he wanted a shower before dinner and even picked out what he wanted to wear. I told him when I went to change to figure the game plan. He had the coupon and after I prepped for tomorrow morning - an early day for me - off we went. 4:30pm for dinner is early, but he was so excited and also anxious to get out of that house!
With last week's schedule, I was prepared for the weekend. High 70s, low humidity and I ran his little butt ragged. Saturday, the tree guys came for the final clean up from last year's storms - it is not good. I posted it. But Bruce had to help prep dinner, went out on the deck to do his flower boxes and also see what his yard now looked like in reality, not just from a WC in the kitchen window. Sunday was our usual errands and then prepping the meals for the week. Monday was dentist appointment and bank.
So we get to the restaurant. You all know we rarely go out for meals anymore. He did with Jen twice a week for lunch after the pool. But mostly, he is on portion control for weight gain. So he knows this is a treat.
We arrived and he ordered me a glass of my favorite wine. He had water. About half way through dinner we noticed lightning through the blinds and Bruce asked me to open them. We were in a shopping center, so did notice the rain and wind, but waited for a break to get back to the truck. We were about 3 miles from the house but took me half an hour to get home. We had to detour almost every turn with trees down. Finally get to the driveway, when it opens up again, and our ramp is metal, so no way I am doing that.
My second husband was a ball player. He walked off the field in a lightning storm during a pro game because players were in metal spikes. So I have some background here. We waited about half hour to get into the house. I was soaked, of course.but who had a better evening than me.
I love that again all the windows are open. And I am so happy that he invited me to dinner. He was so attentive and considerate: napkin in lap, used utensils. Bruce knows all of this is important to me. Ordering the wine and appetizer. We brought home enough food for the week. At this point, who cares? He is so proud. I told him thank you many times. And he was so proud.
Many things on the agenda. His dental appointment did not go well. We have out of town visitors due in. The college roommates are a piece of cake, the childhood friend, not so much. Mary Beth is due in for a weekend. That is always a help. So we shall see. But I had a date! Debbie
