August Stuff

A few interesting tidbits along the way:

Aug 6: Bob used to make extensive power point presentations, but lost all his computer skills. He can barely work the remote for Dish Network that we've had for 15 years! Anyway, I decided he had more attention and might be able to try solataire. It would be a problem because he's left handed so the mouse wouldn't work, and to move the cards, you'd have to hold down the butotn on the laptop, while moving the finger across the pad part. He actually did, it, and I was amazed, because he often can;t remember how to hit just the button! Then I thought, boy, I must be stupid, because he had a kindle fire and it is TOUCH SCREEN, I just need to look for an ap! I found a free solataire and he played and WON!

Aug 8: I had a meeting with our insurance agent to do a check up on our coverages. I had my cell phone with me, I keep a cheap tracfone incase Bob needs to call me when I'm out. So, while I'm at the meeting, it makes this little blurp noise. Usuallly, that is a text from tracfone telling me about some special. In a minute, it makes another one. I thought a few seconds, and remembered that sometimes, it also makes that noise when I get a call, and somehow it doesn't come thru all the way in a ring, and leaves a blurp for a missed message. So I grab the phone and see it was him and I thought he might have to go BM and so was worried he was feeling the need (he can't hold it), or something else was wrong, so I nervously call him back. He answers and says, "I'm glad you called!" I said, "what's wrong!?", I ask fearfully. He said, "nothing... .I'm just glad you called!" Ha, ha, that was cute, my eyes filled with tears.

Aug 15: Bob engrossed in important stuff!:

Last year when Wendy's Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger came out, Bob was in heaven! We would drive by and get him one every time he had therapy, on the way home. He would have PT, then speech. Toward the end of speech, he'd start getting so tired, and I'd remind him we were going to get the Pretzel Burger, and he'd start smiling and laughing, so happy to think about it. Then he was sooooooooo upset when they stopped having them. He would get mad if he even heard the words Pretzel Cheeseburger!

So, you know they are back for now.... here's the funny part. Last night I wanted to show him something and as I approached him, I saw him looking at the tv with all his interest, and he held up his hand to stop me from breaking into what he was doing. I could hear him faintly singing, "I'm the one who really wants to be with you..." fade to Wendy's Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger commercial:

Oh Sandy - isn't it wonderful when they "connect" finally. I am going to have to try Bruce again on the Nook. He does OK with the computer and the mouse - left handed. But loses interest so quickly and after reading your blog, I am wondering if it is just frustration. So yes, the touch screen may be OK now.

Those moments of intimacy - so important. A reminder of why we are here in the first place. I called Bruce from work every single morning at 10 am and he was always so appreciative, like he hadn't seen or heard from me in years - LOL. Bob was "just glad you called." How precious is that?

Please do let us know about the next power chair outing. That Hot Wheel convention sounds great. Bob will love it. Rock on! Debbie

His kindle fire has a cover that he can have it sit up in landscape mode, so he only needs the one hand to touch it with.     Is it a book or a game Bruce was playing on the Nook?     Bob also is reading his kindle with very big font.   But it is only possible because it can sit up by itself in that cover.     In the beginning he read from my ipod, and the small newspaper like column of print was perfect for his smaller field of vision.   He could hold it in his hand and tap it with his wrap around thumb.    Tell me more about what Bruce was working on when he used the nook.

That was a wonderful blog. Bruce is doing great and you are really a great caregiver.

Have fun at  the Hot Wheel convention.

Sandy: he was mainly reading - with a large font, but his field of vision is fine. I have the easel stand as well as the cover stand. The easel stand works well in bed, on his chest. And that was what I was hoping. He always read himself to sleep. If he taps too hard, two pages turn.

He refused to consider any games on it and you know there are a ton of free apps available. But after I told him about Bob, he said he would try it again, next rainy day. He did love browsing the book lists and reading the jacket notes, so maybe he will get back to that again.
