All work and some play

Like Bonnie, I haven't blogged since October, so I feel it's time for an update. While I don't feel like there has been HUGE changes since I last blogged, I have decided to do several blogs (I hope, anyway) over the next week or so focusing on different aspects of my life.

This one will be for Asha, who usually likes to hear my war stories from work. Here you go Asha:

The first update about work that I should mention is: I DON'T THINK MY BOSS HATES ME ANYMORE!!! Yippee!!! I think she is starting to notice that I am trying to do what she asks and expects of me, that I want to contribute to the success of our restaurant, not coast on the others coattails, nor do I want to sabotage her authority or goals. This is a huge accomplishment. Going to work every day feeling like you are not trusted stinks. It has actually even began to be fun to be there!!! WOO HOO!!!

Now, if you dine out regularly you may be aware of surveys popping up on your check. The guest is asked to call a toll-free number and talk about their dining experience, and they are also given the chance to leave additional comments. We get a report every month with these guest comments ver batum. When the server gets mentioned by name at least three times by different guests their reward is to pick a manager to work a shift for them, handing over all earned tips. (This is done in OUR restaurant, not throughout the chain.) Guess who got picked??? ME.

Now I was a server for 8 years, so I am completely aware of the drill. However, I am older now (it's been seven years since I served) and I am in no where near as good as shape as I was then. At the end of the day, I WAS TIRED. But I will admit it was fun to do it for a day (11am till 8pm) and I made a bit of money for our winning server. It was also nice to just work a shift, and not be responsible for it. I was just an employee for the day. The crew also gets a kick out of watching us, seeing if we can hang...if we can walk the talk...see how stupid we look in their uniform. I think I succeeded at all those things.

The other excitement I had recently occurred when an elderly lady smashed into four parked cars in our front parking lot, tried to turn the corner and took out three more with her Caddie. The only person injured was the lady driving, and thankfully, they were not life threatening. She kept saying the accelorator had gotten stuck, and from an eyewittness, she was apparently cruising through the lot at a good clip. One theory is that after she hit the first car the airbag blew, obstructing her view. Not being able to see, we think she was hitting the gas rather than the break. The truth is, we will never know what really happened.

My car had been parked just two cars away from the row of cars she hit after trying to turn. (Still not sure if I am happy or bummed that she missed my car-lol) The three she hit after turning were all employees cars, and two of them were totaled. Out of the 7 cars she hit, at least 4 were totaled. Ironic that her car looked nearly undamaged.

That was the big excitement at work of late, and with all the police etc. that showed up, it was the talk of the town for at least an hour.

Thats all for now. Oh wait- one more thing. A vent/plea of sorts: If you dine out with friends etc, please determine who will pay the check before you get there. At the very least, don't threaten your server with "I'll make sure you don't get a tip if I don't get the check" or put the server in the middle of it. It's incredibly rude not to mention uncomfortable for them (WHO AM I SUPPOSE TO GIVE THE CHECK TO???), and you have taken a good experience for hopefully all and ruined it. If the person you are dining with insists on paying, and if you have offered and they still insist on paying...graciously let them and insist next time is your turn.
