the bright side

Hello everyone, things have been better. Right now I do believe my gpa is still at a 4.0 so classes are really easy. I am getting better at walking even though I did get a bad bubble blister on my toe and i have a red spot on the side of my foot where my brace irritates it but after walking for so long i start to forget about the pain now. I have good news I am an aunt again. My oldest brother has a son now he was born on Wednesday. It made me feel good when my mom put the baby in my left arm because I could actually hold him (while sitting down). In the past couple days I have met a lot of new people (although i would not say i made new friends.) Its crazy though because when I am walking around campus people greet me by my first name and I don't even know who they are. I guess I am getting popular :laughbounce: I hang out around the dorm or in the lobby after classes to keep from being depressed sitting in my room all evening. Thursday I even ate breakfast lunch and dinner with 3 different people so you can say I am "networking". Today I went to OT and I have more good news. I got a brace for my wrist. I will start OT twice a week and after I wear this brace to straighten my wrist, I will receive another peice which will straighten my fingers also. At my next appointment, I also will be getting my shoulder taped. My occupational therapist said my scapula is sticking out and my muscles are very tight but she said the tape will put everything in place and get it straightend back out. I am just so thankful for my wrist brace right now. Today I wore shorts so my leg brace was shown as well as my new wrist bace but it really didn't bother me any. I have seen people in wheelchairs around campus and I even met a man like me who had a stroke so I am not alone. Atfirst it was kind of awkward with everyone staring at me trying to figure out what was wrong. With my braces on and comfortable workout clothes, you'd think I just got back from a chiropracrtor or something. Some people asked what happend, some just stared, and most were extra nice since this was their first time seeing my braces. but what mattered to me the most is that I felt comfortable. Not a lot of african american young ladies can sacrifice they're style to wear tennis shoes and sport a leg brace and wrist brace with confidence while coming in contact with so many curious strangers but I did it and I gave myself a pat on the back becuse it takes a lot to not only do what I did but to feel comfortable doing it! Well I am at home for the labor day weekend. I hope you all enjoyed my quick update. Time for bed. Thanks for the comments! I read them all!

Hiya Auntie Katrina,

First :congrats: to you and the family on the new arrival.

Second, :congrats: on therapy as well as getting the wrist brace. I am sooooo proud of you facing the adversities head-on. You are Strong, You are Invincible, You are WOMAN!!!!!

You'll have many close and dear friends in no time. You are adjusting; there will be those who stare...and it may not be that they are being mean...just curious.

Keep up the good work in your classes as well.

Looking forward to the next college update - enjoy your holiday weekend...please give the baby a kiss from the "cyber" Aunties here at Strokenet.

:happydance: that's me - dancing for joy! Looks like things have made a turn for the best, and that is great. Sooner or later, these different aquaintances will remain as such and some willl become close friends. It's really only been a short while and for that length of time, a lot has happened. As always, I'm very happy for you.

Congrats for all involved in the new addition to the family. Like yourself, I became a young aunt and my oldest niece is already retired and again working. Her son is entering college next year and that gets expensive as you know.

Hope you have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. For me, I have this crazy idea that on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, you must wat hot dogs and all the fixings. Crazy, yes but to me it has become a tradition. Hope you enjoy your vacation home and rest up some so you can start all over again. I think that while you have gotten a red place and a blister, they will adjust to the braces and the walking will do a lot of good. At least you are able to get out and around and don't just sit in your dorm room.

Does your school have clubs etc. Any you are thinking of joining?

Anyway, keep letting your cyber aunts and uncles know what is going on.....I know we're all delighted to hear it and it makes us all feel young again.

WAY TO GO... We knew that smile would bring people to you.. :)

On the brace, can you have your new PT or OT take a look, maybe they can adjust it. Also for time being in the Drug stores is something called "mole skin" it is soft and cushiony you could put a small piece where the brace is rubbing.

you don't want to get an infection.. where it rubs.

Very HAPPY to hear you will have help for your wrist and hand..

Have a great weekend at home, Congrats.. Auntie Katrina.. I am glad your mom put the baby in the arm that you could hold him

Keep up the Great Work..

I am so glad things are looking up for you and glad you are taking care of yourself, yes even falling you took care and rested afterwards, I have had some dumb falls at times and almost don't want to tell anyone, until they see the bruises, can't hide anything when taking the blood thinners. I am glad you are going ahead and doing things, wish i could show up and just hug you to pieces, but it sounds like you are faster than me, yes all us cyber aunties are so very proud of you. :dribble:  :hiya: :gleam:

hi katrina, congrats on the new addition to the family. you have alot to be proud of. you are doing so well and settling in. yes get the therapist to adjust the brace or you could end up with a terrible wound from the rubbing which will make things worse. i'm glad you are back in ot as it will help you, keep your grades and networking up. everything is coming your way now. us aunties here are very proud of you. have a fun weekend with your family and new baby. be safe and well. i hope the new brace for your wrist helps you alot.

Hi Katrina,

I haven't been here much as I was away getting married, thank you notes, etc. so I have just read your recent entries. YOU are totally amazing. YOU are going somewhere. YOU have it in you to succeed. YOU are doing it. Congratulations!

I always have to give advice...try centering all the objects on your tray and then open your hand wide and palm side up slide it under the tray to the middle. Smoothly lift the tray to where your elbow is bent and you feel comfortable. Do not look at the tray, look ahead and walk. I waitressed for 16 years so give it a try.

Last piece of advice. Keep a set of silverware with you, you can wash it later. I always kept my own set of silverware at my desk at work.

Kind regards,

Dickons

Hey Katrina! I am so happy for you! Your "networking" is paying off and you are making so many friends. I am proud of you because when we start a new life experience, we become anxious. You, putting aside your anxiety, forged forth into the college world. I believe you may be taking it by storm! You go, girl!

Wearing your brace(s) show you are being you. Unique you. Anyone is lucky to have you as a friend. Take Care. LK
