  4. Are you okay Janelle? It's been a while since we've heard from you?
  5. Keep on posting. Not a lot of people on here at the moment so its like a small community and we like to hear from each other.

  6. It was while I was in the hospital that they discovered I had type two diabetes. That falling down is not good stuff. So be careful. I'm coming up 10 years. Exercise and oxygen current diabetes control. Was on Jardiance. Loved it for control. Wore me down though.
  7. When I used to fish a lot wearing full body waders leg cramp was very common. There is no way you can quickly remove waders to massage the legs so I used to carry salt or iodine tablets. Sucking one of them would instantly unlock muscles. That might be trick you could try! In fact every fishermen carried them and would suck them occasionally throughout the day. It is common knowledge that perspiration takes salt out of the body and believe me if you fished in body waders when the sun came out you were soaked in sweat very quickly. Deigh
  8. Wow, what a happenstance find the diabetes comments are. You can see my stroke was almost 12 years ago. I've been diagnosed with diabetes off and on for several years. Last weekend (2024/02/04) I was in the ER for issues (weakness, dizziness, etm.). Their diagnosis was Type 2 diabetes. So anyway, in the course of the week I haven't been able to stabilize my blood sugar. My doctor suggested that I'm a Type 1 diabetic and prescribed insulin at 8 units twice a day: "Recommend increase but 15-20% every 2-3 days until 2 hour post meal is <180 and morning fasting is <130 without lows <70". My lowest blood sugar this week has been 363, the highest has been Over-range on the monitor (in excess of 600). In April of 2023 I was operated on for a pituitary tumor. Due to changes in employment I haven't been able to verify the results of that surgery. So anyway, in the course of the week I haven't been able to stabilize my blood sugar. Fortunately my laminate floor is on a sub-floor, so I haven't sustained a concussion. I've been doing a lot of reading as I proofread for about 14 authors.
  9. With my 12th anniversary coming on Wednesday I've held 9 positions with different companies, been thrown out of 3 of them, I've gone 7 months unemployed, and have accepted a new position starting April 1st (Uh-oh). And I bought a house in Florida, I've been diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes and had brain surgery.
  10. Of course and have had for years, maybe before stroke. My great-aunt's perfume, cigarette smoke (I'm a former addict), cigars, pipes, pine forests, perfume that I don't recognize, BBQ.
  11. I've been having a problem (screaming) with calf and leg cramps in the morning, exaggerated by arthritis. My regimen that seems to have worked well is that I keep a pump bottle of BioFreeze (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002J9HBY8/?coliid=I1KUIPWIF1VXU4&colid=8EUZCHDJOGKS&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it) by my bed and when I wake with cramps I lather up with it. Over the past couple weeks my mobility has increased and cramps don't don't seem to be as often
  12. Stiffness is a tricky thing to handle. My legs always feel stiff so have evolved an exercise routine to try and handle it. Every morning I do a floor exercise routine, getting to my feet again afterwards is not ot be filmed! Most mornings I am involved with the stroke chat forum so to avoid wasting this time my feet are on a REVITIVE device which sends mild electric shocks through my feet and legs. During this time both legs are wrapped in leggings that pump the muscles to encourage activity. Now, to be honest I'm not positive that all these things do me any good but I am still able to walk a fair distance every day and I'm not keen to experiment by dropping any of them. Regards Deigh
  13. Deigh, I've been having cramps in my calves and feet every morning. I also have issues with diabetes. I just slug on through it. Mike 2012/02/14 coming up on an anniversary
  14. January always used to be my wind down month after the rush of Christmas. The run up to Christmas was busier than ever last year. With our minister due to retire at the end of December (which he did) more work came down to the ministry team of which I am a member. Then there were the other end of year parties etc in the organisations I belong to. And I spent a few days selling cakes for Lions in the shopping centre, something I love to do as I often catch up with old friends there. At the end of December I had a visitor for five days and then Alice and Trev arrived for their two weeks holiday. They keep me very busy, what shall we do today Grandma, says Alice so out we go, to different shops, out to lunch, off to visit the other cousins who were visiting their Mum about forty minutes drive from here. Trev and Alice were able to go to one of the local beaches three days in a row, three days without the onshore winds which blow in the stingers known as "bluebottles " up onto the sand. Their visit was followed by a visit from my friend Peter from Armidale who enjoys a visit back to the coast. So I had a full schedule throughout January. But there were highlights. I get out more when I have visitors, I become that socialising person, enjoying shared memories. I always find it good fun having the grandchildren around to lunch or just going out for the day even if it is just a picnic in a local beauty spot. I don't get out as much by myself. I need companions to enjoy it with. And I believe having other people to make precious memories with is a bonus in my life. My life for the thirteen years of looking after Ray and my mother were precious years but very hard work. One carer looking after two people is a big strain. It was easier when I got my mother into care and only had Ray to look after. Of course his continuing to have strokes throughout those years took its toll on him and on me. I was very grateful for the other caregivers and survivor's on this site who knew what it was like and supported me through it. Those who haven't been in my position just can't understand. Better for them if they never have to go through it. I think back to those years looking after Ray and I don't regret a minute of them but they were very restrictive. We could never do anything on the spur of the moment, everything had to be planned and catered for. Everything had to be planned so take into account Ray's disabilities. Everything was work for me rather than pleasure. Which is why I am now an advocate for disabled people and their carers to get as much help as they possibly can. Our care system is good but very limited in the way care is provided. There needs to be a lot more help for our long term caregivers.
  15. Deigh, other services are available here, shopping is one I had when I was recuperating from the melanoma op. I wasn't allowed to drive for eight weeks so the home aid took me with her to the shopping centre. She also allowed time for me to have a coffee too, that came under socialising. Sometimes it's nice to go for a drive or to the scenic part of town with someone to help you. Always good to check up and see if there are any extras you have been missing out on.
  16. I have probably explained it badly. Help to shower would be available for me if I asked for it but I'm still fully capable. Since we share the same flat any housework would benefit us both. I was joking about the washing up. I do it for my share of the work. Gardening is my choice. If I didnt cultivate the area out side our flat it would be taken care of by contractors who mow the grass strip and also the domain in front of us. House mainainance and painting are taken care of by the owners but they dont mind me looking after the bits that are mine as long as I dont change the colour! The plan is similar to the Aussie one that is designed to keep people out of care facilities by keeping them independent for as long as possible. I just had a government subsidy on my new hearing aids, which incidentally have rechargeable batteries that should last 6 years. Meaning that I'll have to buy new ones on my one hundredth birthday.
