  1. She should be OK, had a message from her recently to say that they are doing a boat trip that stops in Auckland and wondered if we could meet. Deigh
  2. When I used to fish a lot wearing full body waders leg cramp was very common. There is no way you can quickly remove waders to massage the legs so I used to carry salt or iodine tablets. Sucking one of them would instantly unlock muscles. That might be trick you could try! In fact every fishermen carried them and would suck them occasionally throughout the day. It is common knowledge that perspiration takes salt out of the body and believe me if you fished in body waders when the sun came out you were soaked in sweat very quickly. Deigh
  3. Stiffness is a tricky thing to handle. My legs always feel stiff so have evolved an exercise routine to try and handle it. Every morning I do a floor exercise routine, getting to my feet again afterwards is not ot be filmed! Most mornings I am involved with the stroke chat forum so to avoid wasting this time my feet are on a REVITIVE device which sends mild electric shocks through my feet and legs. During this time both legs are wrapped in leggings that pump the muscles to encourage activity. Now, to be honest I'm not positive that all these things do me any good but I am still able to walk a fair distance every day and I'm not keen to experiment by dropping any of them. Regards Deigh
  4. I have probably explained it badly. Help to shower would be available for me if I asked for it but I'm still fully capable. Since we share the same flat any housework would benefit us both. I was joking about the washing up. I do it for my share of the work. Gardening is my choice. If I didnt cultivate the area out side our flat it would be taken care of by contractors who mow the grass strip and also the domain in front of us. House mainainance and painting are taken care of by the owners but they dont mind me looking after the bits that are mine as long as I dont change the colour! The plan is similar to the Aussie one that is designed to keep people out of care facilities by keeping them independent for as long as possible. I just had a government subsidy on my new hearing aids, which incidentally have rechargeable batteries that should last 6 years. Meaning that I'll have to buy new ones on my one hundredth birthday. 5. I totally failed, cant find a means of application! Can anyone help me here? Deigh
  6. I thought I'd have a go at joining the forum as a new member using a spare name and address. I cant find out how to get started! Has anyone else tried this? Difficulty may show why we have few new members. Deigh
  7. That was tough for you and most uncomfortable. Trust nothing serious happened because of the fall. I have been fortunate that all the stumbles I've had I recovered quickly enough to not lose my balance and fall. I do floor exercises daily and getting back on my feet is not pretty to watch. So, when it was needed that I went down to ground in my den to do a wiring job full of confidence that I could regain my feet afterwards. My confidence was ill-founded as I found there was not enough room for me to turn to get my legs into the right position. I ended up slithering along the ground till I could get through the door into the sitting room. There at last was the amount of room needed to execute my three point balancing system. All this took the best part of an hour to do and I am fortunate that nobody videod me! Deigh
  8. Things are different here, Valerie has a lady come in every other day to help her shower and another who comes in midweek and does an hour's housework. With all these ladies you can imagine how much chat goes on between them and Valerie who could talk the leg off a donkey! Mind you we are a lot older than you and this would make a difference. Nobody comes in to help me wash the dishes or do the gardening! Life is a bit unfair! Deigh.
  9. Can you please tell me about 'A support worker' please. Is this a free service from the Austalian Health service, or do you pay for it? It sounds very interesting. Deigh
  10. No new ones for some time. Occasionally someone makes an attempt in the contact channel and I put a message on showing correct times but nothing happens. Not sure what can be done.

  11. Thats the problem with pets, they tend to take over the best sleeping and sitting areas in the house. I heard a good definition of pets once, it said that a dog has owners but a cat has staff.
  12. Got to admit that it is a bit of a struggle these days. Some days I log on and no-one joins me. Recently we had six chatters on at the same time but this is a record.
  13. Sorry, but I dont know, its on my computer and I just open it and type! The easy way is to look at the opening of this page where there is an article about 'chat'. Just following the instructions there should get one started. We had a good crowd of 5 on this morning, one had to be quick to get heard.! Deigh
  14. Fortunately I am a life member of the RSA here in NZ. Most of the clubs have closed or joined in with the Cossie club with the few remaining members. Locally our branch is still alive but not particularly active except for their regular toenail clipping which also covers partners. We usually meet at the local town hall by arrangement at a set time and date. Unfortunately the Town Hall is being repaired at this time so my toe nails got so long and dangerous I had to have a hack at them myself. The result is nothing to be proud of but will do till the town hall is back in use. Deigh
  15. The infra red sauna sounds interesting, will look into it! Deigh
  16. One of the problems left to me by the stroke is stiffness of both legs. This makes walking difficult and tiring. I am doing a whole lot of things to improve them but would like to know if anyone has a better solution. I walk, daily if possible, about 1K or more if feeling good and the weather is kind. Floor exercises daily which include holding legs in the air unsupported and slow waving back and forth. When on computer first thing, I have my feet on a REVITIVE plate which sends mild shocks through my feet. this is for 30mins at maximum setting. Plus I have calf massager on each leg at maximum setting for set time. I use this daily when on the forum chat so I'm not wasting time.! When dozing on my bed after lunch I have my legs on pillows to raise them up about 6inches. When using the computer I have a platform under my feet to lift my legs to reduce the seat pressure on my upper legs. If I fail to do any of these things it is apparent next time I walk. Obviously I am not doing enough so am eagerly awaiting any good ideas. Deigh

    Hearing Aids

Would you belive it, stroke actually took away my tinitus! It also took away my regular mind bending headaches. Nearest I get to a headache these days is a tightness around my eyes. Getting the aids under control now, I have a program on my phone that enables me to do temporary changes to the volume, this is very handy when in too noisy an atmosphere or the reverse when listening to a speaker at a distance. Thats a good summary! Deigh
  19. All working well again, serviceman called and replaced the faulty unit. Am very impressed with the manufacturer who has done this without charging and is on call at the drop of a hat. Deigh

    Hearing Aids

Yeah, the bluetooth part is a bit tricky, I'm a member of Probus which is a group for active retirees. I've had to leave early when they have speakers because I just couldn't hear them, I think it is possible for the sound system to be fitted with bluetooth so that everyone could hear what was being said. Then I'll have no excuse for leaving early! Deigh.

    Hearing Aids

I've resisted the idea of them for may years but recently my hearing has got worse and last month called on a hearing aid firm for a test. There was no getting away from it, I had to have aids. Three days ago they arrived and were fitted so now am going through the awkward phase of getting used to them. First success was that I could have a conversation with my wife when she was driving, my right ear being practically deaf before now enabled comfortable communication. Being able to hear sounds from all direction made a visit to the supermarket rather noisy. I will have to get used to this. Today the worst problem happened, My phone is fitted with Bluetooth so I can have a conversation comfortably, today a phone call came in with phone in the next room but the calling sound hit me like an explosion! Obviously I must switch off the Bluetooth and only re-connect it when answering a call. Fortunately the cost of the device was covered by ACC otherwise I'd be weak at the knees paying for them. Deigh
  22. We are in mourning at the moment, Valerie's side of the couch not working after a smell of wire burning forced us to pull the plug. Serviceman is due this morning to put it right. We can still sit on it but thats all! Deigh🤕

    COVID

I believe there has been a bit of a re-surge of covid here in NZ so am keeping my masks for use whenever I feel threatened. Public shows are starting to re-commence and next week we will have the 'Age Concern' show where all us pensioners and people with disabilities can wander around and pick up hints, advice and free pens with large bodies for extra grip. I will wear my mask to that and grab enough pens to do my crosswords with for the next year! Deigh
  24. The centrepiece has bluetooth connection for TV and radio and also reading lights. The cupholders are illuminated!
