mcd, thank you for this great entry to your blog! you definitely have proven that recovery doesn't stop. recovery stops only if we stop. as long as we persevere and work hard, we will get stronger. stroke has taken a lot from most survivors here, but it's stories like yours that serve as an inspiration to others. my stroke was 21 months ago and i am determined to get out of my brace no matter how long it takes. it's great to see that recovery does happen and it is possible.
  7. in case you haven't heard, on tuesday, july 15th, my boss and his colleagues in the house of representatives voted 383-41 to override president bush
  8. chris, as kimmie said, speak to your health insurance admin. with your employer for help. i dealt with medicare issues as well, but not in the same way as kimmie. i can say that medicare is just as complicated as social security. both agencies are pros in providing doubletalk and lip service. you can find some good info about the different plans using this link --- http://www.medicare.gov/Choices/Overview.asp you can get the 'medicare and you' 2008 handbook which has good info.
  9. king, thank you for sharing your special feelings with us. i'm sorry for your loss. you loved your dad and he loved you equally. love between fathers and sons is boundless. may memories of your dad bring comfort at this difficult time.

good for you, donna!! always be careful, but never give up or give in! i've been trying to go up and down stairs the same way trying to build strength to the weaker side. as you said, it's all in HIS time.

marti, it doesn't hurt to try new experiences. you might benefit from going since you'll be amongst people who are dealing with stroke just like you. i joined a stroke support group at the rehab hospital here in hawaii and found that interacting with others is good therapy in every aspect. while online support groups like this one can be helpful, t's good to get out in public and maintain interpersonal contact.

hi sarah, your stroke was not that long ago so give yourself time to get better. can you ask for more speech therapy to help you with relearning some communication skills? when i had my stroke, my speech therapist had me do various repetitive verbal exercises and they helped me tremendously. i also found games online to help with word recognition. by using different strategies, i learned to focus on one activity at a time; one person at a time. it's been almost 2 years since my stroke and i have no problem being among large groups of people. take things slow and you'll notice things do get better!
  13. it's impossible to know for sure if these changes will be permanent or if they will intensify or diminish. stroke is a traumatic injury to our nerological system. i found out from others here that it'is important to understand and accept our own limitations. allow an appropriate time for recovery. we need to be patient with ourselves, but keep our minds active. self-worth, confidence and enjoyment of life will gradually return. it may be helpful if you read these articles that will help you and others to understand more about the emotional challenges stroke survivors have to deal with --- http://www.strokeassociation.org/presenter...ntifier=3027431 <a href="http://members.aol.com/matherbw/SRAWeb/7EmoBehav.html" target="_blank">http://members.aol.com/matherbw/SRAWeb/7EmoBehav.html</a>
