SSDI sent me a letter saying I have to show up there before the 23 of May. And bring someone I trust because they my apoint a Representative Payee for you. What does this mean they think I cant take care of myself? Can they have me locked away somewhere? What's my rights? In a panic since I got the letter Yesterday!!!!! Can someone please talk to me about this. Could they take my house and put me in a home or something. I swear everytime I start feeling better and feel a little bit in control of myself something else comes along and scares the he ll out of me!!!!!!!!! :uhm:

sherry,

please don't worry. they aren't going to put you away or take your home away from you. i've seen that letter from our constituents here. sometimes i honestly think it's a scare tactic. i've helped several people with issues dealing with ssdi due to my work in a congressional office. the letter from ssdi is mainly a formality on their part because they want to find out if you need someone to help manage your money/benefits. make the appoinment, answer their questions, and that'll be it.

you'll find info about the payee program at this site -- http://www.ssa.gov/payee/

Hi Sherry.....

I can dig it....the last thing you need is more hassle....

Bring along a relative or good frind, and find out what the hesitation is......

You might have to get a lawyer, but it's *their* game.....

Sometimes I think it'd be easier if we were just junkies....

But you're a stroke survivor.....and show them who you are......

Louise....

I want to say "thank you" for providing so much insight into social security. I have read some of your posts/responses

previously and find them factual and helpful. I felt that an outside observer should just sprinkle some sunshine on what you do. So thanks....

Sherry,

Happy to see you survived your rehab program, but I'm sorry to hear you came home to deal with this. As others have assured you all will be fine. Louise knows this stuff pretty well, check out the link she sent you.

thanks chris! i'm fortunate i am still able to help and i try to do my best. any time i see a post about social security, my adrenalin level raises since it can be a complex issue for some. i've helped so many people who have been stuck in the bureaucratic red tape. no one needs life to be any more difficult than it already is --- especially those of us who suddenly become handicapped.

sherry, louise is right, do not worry about this. i had to become a representative payee for alot of my residents in the nursing home i worked at. it only meant that they could not handle their financial affairs for whatever reason. their social security cks came to me to be deposited into their accounts each month. their family members didn't want to be responsible for accounting foe every penny of their cks. it is just a formality of their system. i'm sure you will be able to handle this on your own but having someone there to help you if needed is a good thing, just in case something has changed over the years in their procedure. louise is very helpful in these matters, she knows her stuff. it will be ok, don't let them intimidate you. good luck.

Hi Sherry! (we're almost neighbors)

You're getting some good advise from everyone......I'll add my 2cents:

do not hire an attorney (yet)! they will automatically get a large sum (of your $$ & before you get your check!) from SS for helping you. if you have any questions/concerns immediately contact your US Rep/Senator in your area...that's what they're there for. & they all have a SS/SSDI specialist on staff.

Remember....your taxes are paying their salary, so make 'em work for it!!

So take a deep breath, don't panic, grab a good friend/relative & go forward!

Just wanted to add my 2-1/2 cents. Social Security also has a list of catastrophic illnesses that a person can automatically qualify for SSDI benefits. However SSDI is not as much as a regular SS check would be but it certainly is better than no benefits. I received SSDI prior to being found totally disabled and qualifying for full SS benefits. Hope this helps.

  • 2 weeks later...

I TOO HAVE HELPED AND ADVISED OTHERS IN MY COMMUNITY IN THIS TYPE OF SITUATION . BE AWARE THAT IT IS A SIMPLE MATER TO HAND AWAY SELF DETERMINATION ....IT IS QUITE ANOTHER TO REGAIN IT. IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO REFUSE, IN ADVANCE, IT THEN BECOMES INCUMBENT UPON THEM TO DEMONSTRATE INCOMPETENCE.........ALSO IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE THAT THESE LETTERS ARE NOT RANDOMLY GENERATED.... THEY ARE USUALY SENT IN RESPONSE TO A CONCERN OF A"LOVED ONE" NOT ALWAYS WITH YOUR BEST INTEREST IN MIND, BE SKEPTICAL AND ALWAYS LEAVE YOURSELF OPTIONS... GOOD LUCK
