amie_1
Hi Kathy I don't really know of a REALLY good stroke hospital either, but I have read some good things about Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia...www.NazarethHospital.org ?? Guest Pjoy
The University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama is a national referral hospital in many areas but especially in neuroscience. They also work closely with neurology. When I worked there we had patients flown in from all over the U.S. and foreign countries. You could call and ask for the resident on call and talk to them. I'm sorry I don't have the phone number. Good luck and God Bless............Joy ps They are in the 'top 10'

arogers
Syrrius radio has a "Doctors" channel - 114. I have that channel on all the time. NYU Medical Center has many specialty programs on and the other day I listened to one on stroke. If we were in New York I'd want them on my side - but that is just based on listening to some radio! Good luck to you! Ann

Guest lwisman
Cathy, I did a search and found this website listing stroke centers by state: http://www.strokecenter.org/strokecenters.html If you are looking for rehab here is NSA guide to researching rehab centers: http://www.stroke.org/site/DocServer/Choos....pdf?docID=1101 Many of the best rehab centers are connected to a university. For example, Washington University in St Louis does a lot of work with stroke rehabilitation. In the Chicago area, The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, which is connected to Northwestern University is considered one of the best.
CathySapp
Hi Lin. I currently go to the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital Stroke Clinic. The problem with a University is that I spend a lot of time with students and very little time with my doctors. Mistakes are prevalent.
Guest lwisman
Cathy, I was at RIC for seven weeks and don't remember even seeing one student. It is not a teaching hospital, but rather is affiliated with the university and therefore has access to recent research.
UpstateLady
Hi Here is a link to US News - every year it gives lists of the best hospital in the country by speciality. I pulled up the page for neurology for you. http://www.usnews.com/directories/hospital...cialty+IHQNEUR/ After my stroke, we used last years list to find a good hospital. I could not have been happier. They found what the think was the cause and treated me. Good luck Sarah
Tom Haynes
I need your help. Does anyone have a list of the top 10 Stroke Hospitals in the USA? Do you or your loved one feel that you have found the "hidden gem" in stroke care? I am in desperate need of another set of eyes into my medical history. Please help....I am at the end of my rope. Cathy, I guess it sort of depends on what type of second opinion you're looking for. If you have doubts about your specific rehab regimine, you may want to consider finding a qualified physiatrist in your area, one who specializes specifically in neuro rehab. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a "hidden gem," but the place I went for in-patient rehab immediately after my stroke has a great reputation and is the place I would reccommend to anyone who has suffered a traumatic brain injury of any kind. It's called Mount Vernon Rehabilitation Hospital (http://www.inova.org/rehabilitation/index.jsp) and is located in Alexandria, Virginia (just outside of DC).The rehab staff there is highly skilled and knowledgeable. I was transferred there straight from the ICU and immediately began an intensive neuro rehab program combing daily speech, physical and occupational therapy sessions, all overseen by a physiatrist. I was there for 5 weeks and the progress I made was astounding. I went from being a drooping, half-paralyzed, wheel-chair-bound blob to being a "seemingly normal" guy who happens to have a gimpy arm and a limp. Despite the great strides a made over a relatively short span, I, too, felt the need to get confirmation that I was indeed on the proper road to recovery so I started seeking out people to whom I could turn for a second opinion. I happened to be fortunate in that my sister-in-law works at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and she was able to get me an appointment to see Dr. Robert Wytek, one of the foremost experts in stroke (with a special interest in strokes caused by carotid dissection - which is what i had). Long story short: Dr. Wytek perormed a quick evaluation to determine the extent of my physical deficits and (based on what I told him about the therapy regimine I was doing at the time) he was able to tell me that I was on the proper course for recovery, which was a relief. He even provided my name to a couple of his colleagues who were doing clinical studies he thought might be worth my while to look into. The best part of my visit with Dr. Wytek was when he took the time to review my MRI films with me slice-by-slice. In doing so, he was able to point out to me the areas of my brain which were left undamaged by the stroke, which included (thankfully!) the part of my brain which controls hand movement (which has been a major concern for me, because I am a guitar player). This was the first and only time a physician went to that level of specificity to help me understand the nature of the damage that occurred to my brain. Good luck on your search for that hidden gem. I'm sure you find someone to help you. There are some great and caring doctors out there. We all deserve to e seen by one. Tom
