Cause of stroke What caused your stroke?

I I guess (? ) this is the lighter side. Anyway, Google APA syndrome, that's what my hematologist says I have. It goes back to the comments about sludge-like blood. Its close to a cancer, so we keep tabs on it. I'm going to see her today. I take Hydrea for that & 7mgs of coumadin /day ( INR@ 2.5 )

BP was through the roof , too. I remember thinking that eating was the only thing I could control, Didn't like work, wife is alcoholic. Craved chips, too much salt. Bingo!!

Gavin, I just looked at your profile and like you're a real fighter...good for you! That's what's needed to beat this nasty beast.

My husband Dan had a middle cerebral artery (MCA) thrombosis which is a blood clot in the largest artery supplying blood to the brain. It then hemmoraged a month later. We'll never know what caused it, just life I guess. He was perfectly healthy, went to bed one night and fell out of bed 5 hours later when he tried to stand.

Stay strong!

My stroke was caused by an unknown injury to my neck. Right rear artery burst, giving me a brain stem stroke. My heads been banged around so many times could have been anything. Hit me in Oct 2004. Big life change!

I was in the hospital for a totally unrelated matter. Actually I had developed pancreatitis due to medication I had been on for diivticulitis. They could not keep and IV going and so they decided since it looked like it would requre a surgery they needed to start a central line. Wnen they put in the central line I had a massive hemmoragic stroke that had 3 simultataneous hemmorages. After that I had an iscchemic stoke from clots I went on to have another stroke Then a little over a month ago I had het another strole. Karen

My memory is a bit fuzzy but between what I remember and what I was told I had a series of TIA's following a major car accident. I was driving a toyota corolla and was hit by a semi sized RV. I have brain and spinal cord injuries and the TIA's were just part of the package.

Hi Gavin,

I have had 3 strokes caused by inflamed arteries just as you said. I was not given meds for this until my 3rd stroke in Nov.2009. My first neurologist was cold and unfeeling and informed me that sometimes people have strokes. I have experienced autoimmune disease in my eyes sice age 31. I am now 53. The doctors have not linked the 2 but I often wonder since my eyes have had to have inflammation controlled by prednisdone drops for 20 odd years. No known cause was ever found but the second neurologist said my arteries were inflamed which caused plaque to give me clots which lodged in brain causing strokes.

I haven't been on here much and posted only a couple of times because everyone wants to use medical terms that I don't understand and reading comprehension keeps me from understanding much of it.

My strokes were in July '05 and sometime after had more. Spontaneous dissection of an artery in my brain that couldn't be operated on as it was too deep. It reduced the left basilar artery cutting down flow to the brain stem and that couldn't be repaired either. My memory is shot as is many of my senses. Right side is back to about 75% of what it was and have trouble with right eye. special prisms allow me to see with both. "Spatial awareness", whatever that is, is almost non-existent.

I forget alot. Old stuff I can remember up to a point but even that is hazy. I know I used to know alot. I was a network engineer, but now? I can;t remember much beyond name and address and some bookmarks on the computer. If not for the email, I would forget I am here.

The things I have forgotten and the things I can remember make no sense to me. Sometimes I don't know what is reality and what isn't.

Yeah I was just curious. So many things cause them, sounds like a few of you had serious existing conditions. I often wonder if I will have a second, but I don't stress over it. <img src="http://www.strokeboard.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Hm, why am I the only one who had inflamed blood vessels. I'll have to research that more.

I am not sure they are ever sure of what caused my stroke, high blood pressure and cholesterol played a role. I have been on BP medication and statin since, that is almost 4 years now and no 2nd stroke so far. I was fortunate to have no residual effects. Keep taking good care of yourself and you will be fine, you are the only you that you get!

My stroke was caused by my birth control pills that caused a clot. The clot passed through a hole in my heart (congenital) that I didnt know I had. Although people try to blow off my stroke as it being caused by a birth defect, that is completely false. Without the hole in my heart, the clot would have gone to my lungs and killed me instantly, so in a weird way, my stroke saved my life!

Kind of curious, what caused everyone's stroke. Drugs, accident, stress, disease? Mine was caused by the blood vessels becoming inflamed and causing a clog. Not sure why anything became inflamed. But, I am always curious about this sort of thing.

well i had two in fact and i was misdiognose which causes me to have a second stroke at first it was thought that since i had a hole in my heart that that was the caused of my stroke so i went off to the hospital to have my heart patch up i think that in was called a pfo, any way the doctors told me that i won"t need to take warfarin and then i had a blood clot and a stroke but i hace been recovering for 9 years now without a stroke so hopefully thats it i have no high blood pressure and no cholesteral and i don"t drink or smoke and i just finish running two marathon , so you never know when it is time or why

Hi Gavin

I had a Thrombotic Stroke on the 10th Aug 07 that is my carotid arteries were blocked the right one 100% the left one 95+% they can not clear a carotid that is 100% blocked so they did a carotid endarterectomy on the left one, that was a bit scary as there was no blood going to my brain from the right one they only had 90 seconds to put a bypass in the left one so they could operate on it. But befor the could do that they found that my heart was also blocked needed 3 stents put in my heart before they would operate on my carotid, they told me befor the carotid endarterectomy I only had a 50/50 Chance of surviving as my brain had only a small amount of blood going to it for a long period and when my brain got the full pressure of blood after the operation the small arteries in my brain could bleed out and I would not wake up, but luckily i only had one small bleed that stopped fairly quickly and did no damage.

Have had numerous TIAs since and other complications including amputation of both legs, but there is always somebody worse of then ones self, all you can do is thank god that you are alive and look forward to the sun coming up every morning and enjoy your future life.

Hi Gavin. My stroke happened 26 years ago during surgery to repair an aneurysm. It was a bleed. I was told before the surgery that there was a chance I could wake up with a left side weakness. Not scary at all. When I went back to see that doctor a few months later. I wanted to know what happened. He told me that I had been told I could be left with a weakness. I told him my side was not weak, it was dead but he did not agree. To them this is called a weakness. So here I am 26 years later with a limp when I walk and still have a weakness in my arm and hand (it is dead to me).

My stoke was caused by having Growth Hormone as a child. My growth hormone was taken from someone who had a stroke. MY parents were asked to give blood also along with my two other brother and sister but none of them had any of the genes so then it was determined that I must have gene mutation which could have only been passed down to me from from the growth hormone.

My stroke happened 12 days after surgery to remove a rod from my femur. A Neurologist indicated the stroke was caused by the surgery. I was at the time it occurred 5'4 110 pounds with no high blood pressure, cholesterol or heart problems. I didn't know going into the surgery that stroke was a risk.

tHEY'VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DETEERMINE THE CAUSE OF MY STROKE. I HAD IT IN THE RECOVERYROOM FOLLOWIN PROSTATE CANCER SURGERY. tHEY PUT ME THROUGH MANY EXPENSIVE TESTS TO FIND THE CAUSE, BUT WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. IT IS NOW EIGHT YEARS LATER, AND I GUESS I DON'T CARE WHAT CAUSED IT ANY MORE.

The surgeon who performed the surgery said I had a basilar artery dissection which caused the brain stem stroke. But, my neurologist is not convinced that is what happened. I had no risk factors for a stroke whatsoever. Since they are unsure what exactly caused the stroke, I am constantly in fear that another stroke will happen.

My husband had an ischemic stroke in February which affected his left side. His left carotid artery is fully blocked and the right 60%-70% blocked. Two surgeons disagree on the cause of the stroke. One said it was due to the right artery blockage. The other said he didn't believe the right artery blockage caused the stroke. He said it could be something in the brain. Who knows if not the experts?? My husband refuses to get a third opinion. I hope we made the right decision. Regardless, now he has a blood clot to deal with anyway. The human body is a mystery.

I had a major bleed in the right side temporal/ parietal lobe. The resulting MRI "hole" in my brain shows that after I finally stopped bleeding I had "lost " brain matter about the size of a very large orange. I am assuming this this rather large loss as I get various comments about the size and a lot weird looks from different doctors when they see the MRI.

My stroke and bleed was caused by me taking too many Aspirin over a 3 month time period due to back and leg nerve pain .

The Aspirin contains a chemical that wears away at blood vessels the brain being one of the most susceptible areas. Then the bleed starts and my clotting factor was non existent. They had to transfuse platelets to get me to stop bleeding. I had no other risk factors .

The good news/bad news is ......... after the stroke I no longer felt pain in my leg..........course I no longer felt anything in my leg
