Cause of stroke What caused your stroke?

My mother unwrapped thr bLanket that swaddled my newborn self because she wanted to check to make sure I had all my fingers and toes. She never checked my newborn brain to see if I had all my capillaries. Apparently, I was missing one capillary in the right side of my brain. I wouldn't be typing this entry with only one hand if my brain had contained all the essential blood vessels. The missing capillary caused undue pressure on a vein, resulting in my acute cerebral hemorrhage, thus resulting in THE STROKE. OH,' "'..."FOR WANT OF A NAIL THE SHOE WAS LOST ..." Interesting, and sort of sad, how one blood vessel changes your wholr lifestyle.

Hi, mine was because of a clot that went to the left side of the brain. The doctors explained that I have a foramen ovale in my heart, which each fetal has and it is supposed to close once it breathes air. But mine didn't close, a turbulence came and the clot was generated.

After seeing every specialist in the hospital and running every test imaginable, the doctors still have no idea why my granddaughter had 2 strokes at 10 months old and another stroke 3 weeks later.

I have genetically small blood vessels that supply blood to the brain stem. Not knowing about having high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes and therefore all three being untreated probably did not help!

I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I was picking up my son at baseball practice when I was struck in the neck by a baseball. The hit dissected my carotid artery. I'd been hit by many baseballs over the years so I didn't even think about getting it checked out. Besides, I still thought I was Super Man. The next day I didn't feel so good but went to work anyway because that is what Super Man would have done. I went to bed with a headache and stoked sometime during the night. Now I know I'm not Super Man.

Short story:

family history + hi sress + smoking = stroke

Long Story:

My stroke happened after working outside in 100+ temps trimming a small tree in our back yard. I was not used to the heat at all. I was looking up and twisting my head all around to get a better look at what I was doing. I think my blood heated up and the twisting loosened a blob of the stuff caked in the vein in my neck. That is at least what I think. Two week later the Doctor opened the vein and cleaned it. Too late for this stroke, but sure to prevent another one. After the surgery he came out and told the wife it was almost completely closed off.

Mine was caused by a head injury sustained in a car accident back in December of 2003. I get, still, COUNTLESS comments and do-gooder input about how I should be leading a healthier lifestyle and this never would have happened. This, coming from people who didn't even know me. I was in VERY good shape physically, didn't do any of the things which people associate with strokes, and was minding my own business as a passenger in a car that met up with a freak accident. YES, I was wearing a seat belt too, sad.gif I have to say on a regular basis. People are always looking for a reason to blame the victim. I have realized the reason for all of this nonsense is if they can place blame on the victim, then they can have this hollow, "It can't happen to me" warped logic. Yes it CAN happen to you, isn't something most people want to acknowledge.

my stroke was due to birth control pills prescribed by my gyn to help eliminate an ovarian cyst, my 45 yr old age was high risk for the pills. I'm still very depressed and trying to cope.

My second stroke was due to my bp droping during my Anurism Surgery. And caused me to become parlized from the waist down. That was on Sept. 20th, 2010. My Frist stroke was in Dec. 10th, 2006 and was caused by my blood pressure. I lost my right arm and my right leg was eff. to. I walked with a four prong cane and had an APO on my right leg to. I also drove a car.

You are so right! At first, I told people Ray had his stroke because he smoked cigarettes; but when I saw their smug reactions, I changed the story to the truth...he had a blood clot that went into his brain. End of story.

I have a blood disorder called "Anti-Phosolipid Syndrome" diagnosed in 1989, but was not put on any medications. It is also called Anti-Cardiolipid Antibody Sydrome, Hughes Syndrome or "Sticky Blood Disease"

I had my first stroke two years later on 4-24-91, when I was 21. This August I developed a bleed (subdural hematoma), after being on Coumadin for twenty-one years, at which time all anti-coagulants were stopped.

It was only a matter of time before I stroked (not being on any meds). I stroked on 12-19-2010, and my world came crashing down. I was able to recover 100 % except for this last stroke.

Atrial fibrillation

My heart is also physically deformed, and the blood doesn't pump out all the way and 'pools' in the chamber, so it clotted and the A-fib shot out a clot. Fortunately it was just a TIA, but it still wasn't very pleasant those few hours it lasted!

I wrote out the whole story on my website, but apparently the new forum rules say we can't post links...?

Hi Gavin, i think i had a stroke because the paternal side of the family heart attack didn't get me at 45. I was lucky and angioplasty did the trick. but my mom died from a series of strokes which were thought to be nosebleeds. I'm right on schedule because she was 70 when they happened. but maybe coumadin will work. I don't know and now that it's been two years I suspect that getting better will mean getting through fear of winter; since my stroke I feel as if it's an enemy but probably the enemy is my attitude....hope the ground hog doesn't see his shadow. jf

officially there is no known cause of my strokes

however unoficially i was put on chlomid by a doctor, i was on chlomid for 12 days, i had 6 total doses. i had according to the doctors roughly 6 strokes over this same 12 day period, then my massive brain stem stroke. my basiliar artery is now fully collapsed as their emergency attempts to open failed in the long run.

anyways imo and most others it is easy to see medication caused my strokes 'but' a doctor has yet to rule that from fears of law suits from my understanding..

Atrial fibrillation was the cause in oct 2010 but they found 2 others that i was not aware of one from small vessels sometime in the past plus infarct marks on my scans from the past.

was on aspirn no high blood pressure or high colesteral never ate salt or caffiene not vegan but 90% of my diet was vegitarian....now with coumidin I miss my veggies. embulism on right side and left side still weak can use left hand but numb sensation. need a cane and limp. get dizzy and a stiff neck on left side. i had alot of emotional liability and it seemed to peak around 6 months post stroke but it has gotten alot better but sad movies or sad stories can bring on gushing tears. My goal is to get rid of the cane this summer. Winter here is treacherous to walk on ice ect.

i can not take drugs for rhythem control because i am on asthma drugs. i do have huge amount of anxiety (take atavan) to control the over whelming fear of having another one. i have a home tester for my inr.

Bleed - cause unknown. The doctors think it's a malformation, but it's not confirmed because they couldn't see it because of the small clot that covered the area of the bleed in the scans.

I've lived a healthy lifestyle for a long time and exercised regularly. I will have my second MRI in three months, and hopefully they can see what the cause is. I wonder if it may be Advil. I had been taking it regularly for this or that. And then I wonder if it was the vigorous neck massage I had days earlier. Well, I guess it's done and won't be taken back.

I had a pfo in my heart The Val e that. Bypasses the lungs while your in the woumb.

Well the v e be er. Omlletlg owed and had been leaking and a clot had formed that cause a TIA I woke up at 2am for the. At broom and discovered my right arm moving in uncontrolably and my right leg unable to control. So I ended up. Dealing across the floor for help. Spee h was also affected My worst experience in the hospital was unable to walk I had to use a commode by the bed. So being modest I tried to use it one night after a visitor and I made it to the seat but moving back to the bed I had to stand turn a bit and sit

Well I stood tried to turn and fell on my face on the hard floor I want able to raise my hands to cover my face.

Well I ended up with another trip to the cat scan for a second time that day.

In the end they said the leak want enoughg to worry about fixing

HI. My mom had her stroke while having elective surgery to clip a brain aneurysm. We were told surgery went fine and then she didn't wake up right away. She had a small stroke in the internal capsule area of the brain resulting in right side hemiplegia. Doctor still isn't sure what went wrong but thinks that her brain did not like a brief interruption of blood flow when a temporary clip was placed.

Turns out I was the 1.

I also get daily migraine about a 9 or 10 on pain scale so..

dan tripped on a rug------ dissected his left carotid artery---- sought medical attention for blindness ( in one eye) and worst headache ever---- doc played god read his own film missed the stroke coming -the dissection- which was found by radiologist the next day same film just read by a actual guy who is suppossed to read films for a living. then to top it off the sam arrogant doc did a lumar puncture - so he closed the door and the window..... the radiologist reading the fim the next day was trying to call dan back in but the stroke team told him he's already being airlifted... the nuerologist diagnosed dan unseen while he was on the plane baing airlifted in.... and the interventional radiologist cecked it out with a camera and she was "dead on" with her diagnosis... no TPA due to lumbar puncture and it would not clear mechanically.... so hear we are.... nancyl

Hi Gavin, I'm a newbie at this. I had my stroke on 3/11/2012 and they don't know what caused it. I don't know why but that bothers me. I'm not sure I'd feel any better if I had the answer but I think I would. I have high bp and elevated cholesterol but they are in control. I am very lucky because I only have a small amount of memory issues and nothing more. I am grateful every day for being as well as I am. My mother, age 86, passed from a massive stroke in 2006 so I have that in my history. Also, my father passed at age 56 from a heart attack. I feel like I'm doomed. Most times I don't dwell on it but sometimes in the quiet of the night I get pretty close to a panic attack. It doesn't happen all that often but i need to get beyond this.

Jo, my husband is the one that had the stroke, but I know those panic attacks all too well. It's only been a month or so for you, you'll relax more as you hit anniversaries like six months or a year. The thing is, we know something that most other people don't, and it's a terrible thing to have to know, but you learn to live with it. Time heals all.
