Cause of stroke What caused your stroke?

Kind of curious, what caused everyone's stroke. Drugs, accident, stress, disease? Mine was caused by the blood vessels becoming inflamed and causing a clog. Not sure why anything became inflamed. But, I am always curious about this sort of thing.

Hi Gavin.

My stroke was caused by my high blood pressure and my cholesterol. I have an APO that I wear on my right foot, I also walk with a four proned cane. I also have a Thrombotic Stroke. There are not many of me around as I have not found anyone that has what I have. But I get around.

at firdt when i had my stroke ththe doctor thought that it was caused by a hole in my heart, but then i got it repaired after that and then the doctors took me off of warfarin blood thinners and then i had a second stroke because of a blood disorder which likes to clot and since i have been on warfarin no stroke since , so the wblood clot was the cause of my stroke

H Gavin, My stroke happened during surgery to repair a brain aneurysm which is a malformation of an artery. This could be from birth. An aneurysm happens when the wall of an artery becomes very thin in one spot and it is dangerous because when the blood spurts through the artery , it could burst from the pressure and cause a major bleed. I was lucky because I had a warning. My entire left side went numb a few times. The last time it went numb, it scared me and I went to the ER. I think I was very lucky because mostly an aneurysm is found in an autopsy. They found mine a week and a half after I was hospitalized. I was then scheduled for surgery the next day. I had a stroke during the surgery. It could of happened any time. I was told I was a walking time bomb, so yes I was pretty lucky.

Hi Gavin,

Mine was caused by my constant ingestion of aspirin for headaches because of a stressful job. I had a brain bleed after taking 2 Stanbacks on New Years Eve. God saved me and my otherwise exellent health. I wasn't a vegan but a vegetarian and the doctor told me that certainly played a part in my survival. WHEW!

Gavin,

Mine occurred just as Mc's. During surgery to clip a critical aneurysm, it burst causing the stroke.

You may find, as most of us do, searching for a reason, what you could have done to prevent it, and trying to make sense of it all won't change the fact that it did happen.

What you may be feeling is pretty common especially for those of us who were young, healthy, and in good shape. It seems we grapple with trying to make sense of how we ended up like this when we thought we were still young, somewhat infallible, and doing everything right. Don't rack your brain. Stroke respects no age or physical condition. It befalls infants still inutero.

Smile, look forward and enjoy your life. Don't give it any more than it has already taken.

I had a spontaneous dissection of my right carotid artery, which then clotted and let go. 3 years later I found I had a completely blocked right carotid artery. My doctor at the time speculated that the artery was 80% blocked at the time of the stroke. So I would have been a good candidate for an enderectomy if my doctor had asked me if one of my parents had a blocked artery(my dads was 85%) or if my dads' doctor have told him to warn me about that possibility. Oh well, I'm on the slow miracle track of rehabilitation. That artery is now 100% blocked which is actually good news..

Yeah I was just curious. So many things cause them, sounds like a few of you had serious existing conditions. I often wonder if I will have a second, but I don't stress over it. :) Hm, why am I the only one who had inflamed blood vessels. I'll have to research that more.

Gavin mine was caused from a medical procedure while in the hospital totally unrelated to stroke. They were putting in a central line and that caused me to hemmorage from two places in my brain. Not good. Karen

The doctor's couldn't pinpoint the exact reason for my stroke. I had a lot of risk factors, family history of heart attack, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, weight, I was on birth control and suffered from migraines almost daily.

Gavin, my stroke was caused Fibromuscular Dysplasia. It is a disformity of the arteries. I am not sure if they were inflamed but it's something to check into. I did not have high blood pressure/high cholesterol or anything health concerning. I had my stroke in 2001, and like many others was concern of having another stoke. Since that time, I have no longer experienced headaches like I did prior to the stroke (which is a big plus) and I am not as fatigued as before. I have not experienced any stroke related issues and have been stroke free for 8 1/2 yrs.

Hi Gavin!!

Mine is a strange story, at least back in the day when it happened it was pretty unique. About 2 weeks after I had had my second child I started hadinv symptoms of migraine headaches---which I did have----while I was out grocery shopping. I came home and the headace started and then the precursur symptoms of the migraine called aura, started again - - - - highly unusual for us migrainers. Then all of a sudden I had the classic symptoms of a stroke ---right sided weakness, facial paralysis, problems walking, slight problems lifting/holding things with my right side. I am a health care person (now retired due to permanent disability) and knew what was happening, but everything was so subtile that didn't say anything to anyone yet. I saw my neurologist who followed me for the migraines and to make a long story short....after another week and a half of tests and ultimately having an arteriogram which caused the major stroke, it found that I had an Internal Right Side Carotid/Vertebral Artery Dissection.

Almost exactly 10 years later I had a second stroke which was diagnosed as either a silent stroke or caused by a migraine. The neurologist I had to see at that time could not determine the specific cause, but did say that workeplace stress exacerbated my situtation which is why she pulled me out of working into permament disability because she felt that it was too stressful for me to continue working....that the third stroke would most likely be fatal. This is cause a lot from the stress of my Aphasia, resulting from my first stroke in '89 which gets worse when I'm under stress.

Hang in there!!

Hi Gavin,

My stroke was caused bya dissection to my right internal carotid artery, and the "best guess" from doctors as to what may have caused the diessection was "freak accident" so needless to say that I've not had much closure on the topic, and worse stillfor my peace of mind (or rather, lack thereof) is that I'm still not sure the carotid dissection won't cause another stroke, because the neuologist decided to leave the dissection "as is"

you're so right Maria, about trying to look back at the cause for this traumatic event, and hoping to find a more concrete explanation, I too, like Gavin have been searching for what may have gone wrong, in large part to figure out if there is anything I can do, toavoid having another one. unfortunately my anxiety got to the point thatmy doctor decided it was advisable to turn to medication for an assist, something I had originally beeen very much opposed to, but gave in when it started negatively impacting my eveyday life.Coming to terms with the fact that I did suffer a stroke and needed to not let it consume me any more than it already had physicaly has been one of the most difficult manifestations of all of this for me.Meditation has also beena good balancing tool.

Gavin,

Mine was caused by simply going to a chiropractor for a routine adjustment and he adjusted my neck and I ended up having the stroke in the office. I had a double basilar Artery dissection which caused strokes in my cerebellum and brain stem. So I walked in the office fine and left with a stroke.

Mine was a thrombic stroke. Which is a bleed I think. At least that is what I think it is. I could do some researth on it and get back to you on it that way we could both lean about it.

Hi Gavin, so glad you were a survivor. I had a stroke about 5 years ago, I have a condition they label "Lupus Anticoagulant" what it means is my blood is to thick. I take 13 mg of cumadin a day and had to have all other family members tested. There are 7 siblings and my daughter. I have one sister 1 year older than me that has this issue as well, she hasn't had a stroke so her's is controlled by an aspirin a day. I understand your wanting to know more, I think that is why we come here.

My Tootie had 2 strokes when she was 10 months old, then had another stroke 3 weeks later. After seeing almost every specialist at the hospital and running every test imaginable, the treatment team had no idea what caused the strokes.
