We often say "don't believe everything you hear"; but this is a classic "don't believe everything you read"!

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Over at Retraction Watch, the watchdogs on scientific misconduct are reporting another example of a predatory publishing sting. And this one has a Seinfeld spin.

Remember the famous  episode called “The Parking Garage” where Jerry is caught urinating in public? The main character in the popular sitcom tried to get out of trouble by telling the security guard he had a disabling fictitious condition known as “uromycitisis.” Clearly the publishers at the Urology & Nephrology Open Access Journal missed that episode.

When non-scientist and non-urologist John McCool sent them a mock paper about uroymycitisis, it was peer reviewed and accepted for publication within a few days, if McCool agreed to pay $799 plus tax. McCool refused to pay, but the paper was published anyway. The paper lists the names of three fictitious authors from a non-existent research institute, all using references drawn from the Seinfeld cast of characters.

McCool, a self described Seinfeld “fanatic,” told us he got the idea for this prank after another journal run by the same publisher, MedCrave Group, invited him to submit a paper even though he is not a scientist.

I once used a tool called SCIgen which generates context free computer science papers to see if anyone ever really read them or checked out the references...nope, they sent me an acceptance letter a couple weeks later.

Well the idea of being able to get accurate medical information from "Scientific Publications" just went out the door! LOL

Scott, did they pay you for your "paper" when they accepted it?  If yes, Tracy and I might just put our heads together to plan a "paper", perhaps something about "It REALLY is a downright ugly feud between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and actor Matthew Perry."  Lol   :bouncing-for-joy:

Are you familiar with the tweets between Justin and Matthew Perry?   When it was on the news here, it mentioned that it was also big news in the States.  Strange how we address out Prime Minister by his first name, but he's so laid back, seen on TV wearing blue jeans much more often than we see him in a suit!

Tell me more about these tweets!

I can only speak for myself, but I would bet most Americans and Australians are jealous of your prime minister!

The women for obvious reasons and the men...reasons.

Janelle, go to https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/entertainthis/2017/04/03/matthew-perry-declines-justin-trudeaus-request-for-a-rematch/99971568/

It was an April Fool's prank, but some people thought it was serious!!  Who'd a thunk?

To get the full story (it's not lengthy), make sure you scroll through an advertisement to read the last paragraph about:  "Though Trudeau's threat might not have been serious....

Makes you wonder if people forgot how to laugh!!
