OxyContin: Who To Blame?

4 posts in this topic

In this week's CBC Marketplace Watchdog newsletter, there is mention of an interesting article about OxyContin; gotta blame someone, right?  Huh?  The article can be found at http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/oxycontin-1.4229739.  Notice the 2-minute video at upper left of article which gives the outcome of the lawsuit.

Since the same class-action lawsuit was settled in the United States 10 years ago, did it reduce the addiction epidemic??   Just curious....

  I can't edit this....What I meant to ask: Is OxyContin still being carried by drug dealers?  (It still is in Canada!)  Or is the lawsuit the reason that Fentanyl is now the demon drug causing the overdosing?   (Over 100 deaths each month from O.D.'s in British Columbia alone.)

Yes, the pharmacy's still carry oxy as do the illegal dealers but its street use is in decline because heroin, fentaynl and carfentanyl (used to sedate large animals like elephants) are readily available and far cheaper. These are all killing people but the worst is carfentanyl because it is 10,000 times more potent than morphine and being illegally imported from China I've read in the papers.

Scott, do you know how the money that the States were granted because of this lawsuit was spent?

I'm really hoping the provinces in Canada will spend it on additional (and possibly) longer rehab services for addicts.  To see parents of young adults lose their children to O.D., while on a long waiting list for rehab is heartbreaking.

A massive problem being recognized but not effectively addressed: My comment.... :@#*%:
