I didn't want to start this conversation, I was waiting for someone else to ask questions and then I could have come in showing my knowledge about it and look clever. This hasn't happened so I've had to start the ball rolling.

I have had problems for some years with constipation, it is mainly due to a medicine I've been taking for some time Losec. My stroke added to the problem and it got quite uncomfortable at times. About a year ago I started yet another search for a solution and came across an advert for MUCIL. 'You probably havent enough fibre in your diet'. Said the advert. "Nonsense", was my reply, "I have a good range of all the right things in my foodstore". Anyway their argument was pretty convincing so I tried it as a powder, spreading it over my breakfast cornflakes.

I have never looked back, the results were excellent so now I'm an advocate of it.

Deigh:happy-dance:ooops, sorry, that wasn't the ideal Smiley to add!

Thanks so much for sharing such helpful info.  I think a lot more of us deal with this than anyone knows about.  And I for one enjoyed your smiley even if it was an oops.

My doctor put me on Lizness.. it's a stool softener. He also could not preach enough, " Fiber is your friend"See the source image

I have that problem mainly from my medicines ..and I get a lot of hemorrhoids.. and not to be gross but he told me if they 'pop' out try to push them back in. And I do or soak in a warm bath with Epson Salt   https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/epsom-salt-bath  <------ I do this as well

I so relate. Since my stroke 21/2 years ago I have had to take something daily just to go. For me it was Miralax. I have wondered if others have had the same experience. I just have been reluctant to bring up potty talk lol. Recently I have had to start a med for something totally different and it makes me go! For the 1st time goodbye Miramax!

I'm suffering from constipation for the first time in my life over the last week or so. I was in hospital for a week with gall stones and it's completely stuffed up my gut. The hospital gave me a bunch of stuff to go home with but it all seems to be an all or nothing response. I now have great respect to those of you who've been living with this long term.

I've had "the other" problem since last September.  I was thinking about keeping a food journal, but it hasn't made any difference what I eat.  I've seen my PMD who ran all sorts of tests, (blood and otherwise) all negative.  Off to a specialist on the 12th.

(For me, fiber's an enemy.)

That is 'Kind-a" what I deal with but not really. I have food sensitives and intolerance to soy, lactose, gluten. The Lactose diagnosis was back in 2003 and on going ( from seeing allergist) Then as time went on I was drinking soy milk and non-lactose whatever.. I was still having loose bowels and gas and cramps. Again to the allergist and found in 2007(ish) was told to elevate soy and my troubles got better. THEN.. after my gastric-sleeve I still couldn't handle some things.. so I was told to see a "Butt Doctor" as I call mine. He's the best to see if all the ..oh back up.. so after 2009, my stroke, my doctor sent me to get an colonoscopy and endoscopy  due to the amount of medicines I was now having to take  added to my bleeding hemorrhoids. Polyps run in my family so ......... OK so caught up to getting it and I have the beginning of diverticulitis  ( main cause is irritant in your gastro tract + hereditary ) YAY me. I just laughed and said.. "Of Course........ Of Course I have all these problems" ((very sarcastic mind you))   See the source imageOh yeah Fiber isn't my friend either :(

Thanks, Kelli.

I've had three colonoscopies so far, polyps, etc. too.  I tried soy, and that became a problem.  Now, and for quite a long time, I've been drinking almond milk.

Diverticulitis ---> YUP, hemorrhoids ---> YUP, heredity ---> YUP!  Oy!

Also support your gut bacteria with resistant starches, they feed the bacteria, not you. Cooled cooked rice and potato starch added to a

glass of water or any beverage, served cool, not hot works very well. Add flax seed ground to your oatmeal, or whatever you can put it in.

you could mix Metamucil, water and potato starch in one drink, i add a liquid arginine, carnetine Coq10 To that .

I've been on both ends of the spectrum in the past couple years (since the stroke).  At first, when I was still in a nursing home after the stroke, I got so constipated that the nurse had to actually remove the blockage (sorry if that's TMI - I know it's gross).  She said, "Are you taking your Miralax?" and I said, "My what?"  That was the first I'd heard of it.  But apparently, being unable to walk and having to take so many constipating meds, standard procedure is for the doctor to approve a nightly dose of Miralax - but I had to request it each night, and no one had ever mentioned it to me.  Believe me, I started taking it after that!

Then, almost a year later, I had a sinus infection, and the treatment was antibiotics, which gave me diarrhea.  By the time I got over that (about 4 weeks later), my doctor started me on Metformin - more diarrhea!  Every week for 4 weeks we increased the dose, so it was another month of agony.  Then, when we finally leveled off the dosage, I came down with some sort of intestinal bug, and - you guessed it - more diarrhea.  This pattern continued for 6 straight months - healing up, coming down with something else.  By the time I made it through all that, I couldn't stop the diarrhea.  I had to completely quit eating fiber (and I love my salad greens!) and spicy foods, or anything else that was hard to digest.  That didn't leave anything compatible with my diabetes, so it totally messed up my BG readings.  It took about 3 more months before I could barely start adding in little bits of fruit and vegetables.  I'm back to eating loads of veggies now, and I can handle it just fine.  I only mention all this to say, my heart goes out to everyone who's posted here.  It may be an uncomfortable topic to bring up, but it can really become something that your life revolves around when it's out of whack!
