COVID

Been asked to post about my covid.  Mentally this is challenging for me.

I was vaccinated twice with Pfizer.  First shot in May 2021 and 2nd shot in July.  Flu shot received in November

No issue or discomfort for any of the shots received.

December was a tough month.  It was more stroke related.  After Christmas though I was picking up and doing more exercises.  Even pondering my 5000 step a day that takes me an hour to increase to 6000.

Rang in the New Year and even stayed awake till midnight.  Increased my Goal on the Fitbit to 6000 for January 1.  I took it easy on New Year's Day.  January 2nd felt well and did the 6000 steps a bit more than an hour.  I felt good.  I had my typical afternoon nap and overslept for 2 hours.  Stayed up briefly for dinner but went back to bed after dinner.

The first thing I noticed was I couldn't get warm.  Put the warming blanket on.  Slept for 4 hours and woke with a scratchy throat.  I took throat lozenges and Tylenol.   I later woke at 7 am.  Still cold and now my throat was difficult to swallow.  I couldn't walk with my cane.  My wife brought up my walker.

I was not hungry.  I'm just very tired and dizzy. Went back to bed. My throat was really restricted.  The right-side tingling in my body was intensified and spasticity has also increased.

Now I was just sleeping and taking pills or lozenges.  Heat blanket on high yet couldn't get warm.  My body temperature was fine, blood pressure was 140/90.  I barely sat up now in bed and was wheezing a bit when I breath.

The wife concerned now tracked down a Covid Nasal test.  Test me and it was positive.  Contacted our nurse and informed her what we should do.  We felt it might have been a false positive.  She was doubtful but would ask the doctor.  Let me rest or get to hospital if my breathing gets worse.

The next day the nurse said I have covid.  Doctor asks if I was vaccinated.  We said yes except for the booster.  The doctor said I still get the booster shot.  We said that it was scheduled for the 11th of January.

The next few days I was mostly in bed.  No hunger.  Tired and chilly.  I could only swallow Jello or puddings.  Even drinking water was a challenge.

Relying on my walker to get around again.  By now many families and friends were contacting us.  Many said don't let me lay in 1 position too long.  Move to side.  Try and get up walk a wee bit.  My throat was a spooky feeling.  Sitting up in bed was also very dizzy.  My blood pressure stayed high for the next week.  I was chilled but my body temperature was good.

After some of the dizziness subsided, I did manage to walk out to the living room and sit up for a bit.  It didn't last long till I went back to bed.

This sleep, chills, dizziness, swallowing fear went on for the next two weeks.  A few times I thought it was over but would fall back into the sleep routine.

The family doctor called to check and discuss other health concerns with him.  He estimates that I'll be experiencing symptoms for a long time due to the area where my stroke was located.  He said he was so happy I had all the shots.  His concern now is my sugar and some of his concerns are due to low activity.  I need to get working that body again.

I have tried the last 2 days here but only can last 10 to 20 minutes.  Run out of energy.

I hope this was what the member meant.

Thanks Mark, So good to hear a first hand account. So far I'm clear but reality is most of us will get it eventually.  I've heard don't push too hard too soon as that seems to be a trigger for long covid, but then no one really knows yet, and how that will translate to those of us who already have to manage brain fatigue from other sources is a very complex question that I doubt anyone is looking at seriously yet.

Fingers crossed you continue to improve and just think how much worse it could have been if you hadn't had your shots.

Mark a great report. Thank you. I have been vaccinated and boosted since Sept. In Nov I had the Delta variant and am now getting. over the omicron version. I feel being vaxxed it kept me out of thE hospital. In particular with Delta. More soon when I find some energy..

Brilliant writing Mark, just the information we all need to arm ourselves in case we catch the virus. or at lease to be able to compare with anything we pick up by accident. Nobody has mentioned the coldness before so that info was most welcome. I believe the rest of your family also got caught as it spread.

All the very best with your recovery exercise plans.

I knew it would happen this way- It has always been this way with me. There would be something going around at work, and it missed me (I thought) Then when I began to feel safe, and everyone seemed to have already have had it, I WOULD CATCH IT. This is no exception-I have COVID. I seldom go outside anywhere- can't drive or walk so my sweet hubby does it all,Apparently, he brought it home to me. So far. all I can say is that Shingles was worse, in terms of how bad it made me feel. I haven't been to my doc yet for an official diagnosis, but just reading the symptoms, it sounds like I have the Omni variant . One of its signatures is that it comes in like a lamb-you think that it's so mild that it's just a case of the sniffles, then it sucker punches you.   Becky

Sorry you have had Covid Mark, Willis and Becky. It is rife around here too. I still go out to the shops etc. I do keep enough food in the house, over the counter medicines etc for a couple of weeks in case I get it. I hope you are all feeling better soon. The thought of long Covid worries me but as I live with the lasting effect on my right lung of having a bad virus 33 years ago I know that many viruses can leave a lasting legacy. I just hope that doesn't happen to any of you.

Becky thank you! You just confirmed something I have had ALWAYS happen to me and now I know another. Yes that almost cocky feeling of "Oh ya I beat this one. I'm not going to be affected by this virus," Then weeks later POW!

We seem to be very fortunate, locally there have been very few cases and thanks to our Jacinda's team the spread throughout the country has been well contained. Nevertheless we are sticking to the much hated masks and recording all our visits to shops and other places. Schools have re-opened and so have some club activities. Our local ukelele classes have started again, meeting in our leaders open garage and keeping official distancing rules.

One of the interesting facts about the distancing is that there has been very little spread of the common ailments like colds, apart from a few sniffles probably from pollen I've had a remarkably free breathing time over the last year and my annual bill for paper hankies is well down.

Crazy isn't it. I have no idea where it came from but I appear to have caught a cold (although it could just be worse than usual hayfever) RAT test came back negative. But as someone who snuffles through life these days Covid being everywhere sucks. So many cross looks when I sneeze or blow my nose in public. I am a modern leper

Getting more energy and been doing treadmill.   The right-side tingling is more intense.  Hopefully, I can walk it off.  The never say never applies again.

NZ has had a jump in numbers today, 360 cases of Covid, this is the worst figure we have ever had. Bit Scary. I needed to sneeze when out on my daily walk and muffled it the best I could before local panic could set in.

Deigh it is certainly interesting to watch peoples mind set change as the authorities give up on trying to contain it.  They are still getting us to check in everywhere, but I really don't understand why as they have given up on contact tracing and letting people know where the cases are.  So we just have to assume it's everywhere we go. I live in dread of picking it up and passing it on to my parents. I know we've all had our 3 shots but that doesn't mean we won't get it and Mum's existing lung condition and age means she is susceptible to severe disease even with vaccination.

Las Vegas (the gambling capitol of the world) announced today the mask mandates in all casinos have ended. Stay tuned this could get interesting in a state with contact so close it has legal prostitution.

I have one lung and have my spleen removed so I'm in a rather precarious situation. There is not point in me living like a hermit so I'm carrying on as normal whilst taking reasonable precautions. Life is too short to do anything else!

Absolutely, I refuse to let this thing turn me into a hermit. I wear my mask, wash my hands, and accept that I can't control this. I get strange looks when I won't get into a lift that already has 2 people in it, the lifts in my apartment building are quite small and lots of people don't bother with their masks any more.

The world as you and I knew it is in a mess, but to come to think about it, this has been the same since man arrived on the earth! my wife got a bit upset about the Covid restrictions the other day but I pointed out to her that we two had survived early childhood when people were dropping bombs on us, not been hit by the bullets they fired, as adults survived three serious bank collapses, two world depressions, several nuclear threats, food shortages, three epidemics and even Trump's efforts at goverment......so we can handle Covid.

Well WA has finally caught up with the rest of the world.

My town, at the moment, has 3 cases.

Been wearing a mask for a couple of weeks...don't know how everyone has coped for a couple of years!!

Mark, your covid experience is scary! Especially the tingling sensation. That always scares me, but to have that plus all the other symptoms...

Willis you crack me up!!

Two variants of covid like it's nothing!! Glad you are ok, you've definitely had more than your fair share. Hopefully no more for you!

Becky hope you are ok!

Sue and Heather, I'm sure WA is the butt of the east's jokes but that's all good.  Keep being safe!

People can think you are weird all they want, keep doing what's right for you!

Janelle, no laughing about it here. The little girls next door have been home for a week. Oldest girl Joey has the bad cough, poor pet not sleeping day or night. The other sisters and their brother seem fine. My son Trevor still has the cough although he came out of quarantine three weeks ago. It seems some people get the mild cases but even some of the triple vaxxed like Trevor can have after effects. Stay safe and well.
