pain meds problem again!!

well, I had written previously that I thought the Lyrica was going to work for us. Curious if anyone else has had problems. It really hasn't helped with the pain. But now we are having problems with anger and depression. It is bad and the only thing we can figure out is that it is the Lyrica. So I am wondering about this. I went on a website and some people had posted about Lyrica and a few said they had depression and anger issues which made me feel like we aren't crazy. I spoke to doctor tonight and he said there was no way that Lyrica would cause this. Anyone else have problems?

Well I have just spent about two hours reading posts about Lyrica. We are going off it. Many people have the same side effects we are having here. Very scary trying to take away this stroke pain

Trudy,

Just a suggestion for you - print off the information you have been reading about Lyrica and take it to your doctor. Sometimes it helps if you have something in print to back up your discoveries.

Good luck to you in finding a medication that helps you!

Me and my neurologist decided to get off slowly and the VA changed some of their meds as well but I still don't have relief from my pains yet. In fact I'm on leave of absence now trying to recover and be able to walk again for longer distances.

Lyrica really didn't help with my pain and the doctor did take me off of it slowly. One of my other side effects was that it did make me quite drowsy which I surely didn't need.

Good luck in finding a pain medication that does work.

Strange this recovery stuff. I am on Lyrica for burning nerves in combination with Robaxin (a muscle relaxer) plus xanax. My primary physician indicated that she put me on xanax because it sometimes works well with Lyrica, even though I don't have anxiety problems. You know what, it's been working. I have mostly good days and maybe a couple of slightly painful ones which I really attribute to my sleeping positions. Even though I took my meds earlier, I'm burning slightly, but I take another before I go to bed. Again, you just don't know. Nothing has been fullproof, and I was on neurontin at one point - it didn't help me and made me have nightmares and ringing in my ears. So, right now is better on Lyrica - I do have pleasant dreams.

Yes we have tried Neurotin. Apparently he just can't take anything. others give him bad dreams and hallucinations. Today we started trying accupuncture. Wish us luck! The Lyrica didn't help with the pain and the side effects were not good. The doctor who did the accupuncture said he had heard that about Lyrica with some patients so that made me feel we weren't just saying it. thanks for the replies!

Trudy.......I took Lyrica for fibromyalgia, and had SEVERE eyesight issues, numb feet, weight gain, anger, and depression .......so I just stopped it. I found out later I should have slowly withdrawn it from my system, but when I realized what was happening, I wanted off that stuff as fast as I could get off. Lyrica is bad stuff ~ at least for me. Others may have good responses to it, but I had nearly every side effect known (and I didn't know what the side effects were to it until much later).

i have never taken the drug. but i do know it was designed for fibromyalgia patients. and their constant pain. my caregiver i once had took it for her fibromyalgia and she had severe swelling in her hands and feet and other issues with it. like all medications, some work for some and not others. her doctor told her to stop taking it immediately. trudy, i hope you can find the right med there has to be 1 out there to help you.

good luck and keep us updated on how you are doing.

I am on Nuerontin 900mg 3x a day.. and Keppra 1,000 mg 2 x a day.... Baclofen up to 30 mg a day...also Tramadol 1 every 12 hours.

The Keppra gave me crazy-crazy death dreams and it also caused some bad anger problems to where i wanted to get into fights with strangers b/c i felt powerful and impulsive. I did none and finally the anger and dreams dimenished. thank goodness.

I still have pain despite all of the meds i am on.

*sigh* i have found a good yahoo CPS group where it is good to go vent and stuff.

Cheers-

~Amy

Hi All,

My husband Tom is on baclofen, keppra, trazadone and night, asperin, citropram? (anti depressant) and of course the good old fentny patch. He is on 75 mg change it every three days. He cannot do pain killers cause he abuses them. (recovering addict of 15 years)..although he is trying the same old with the patch. Anyways, he was on Lyrica, bad bad! His legs swelled up the size of balloons, fluid made them weep. Neurontin? They over dosed him in the hospital on that.

So this is all that seems to work for him. He still shakes immensely, he seems to have gotten worse than better. His stroke was in november 0f 06. He cannot even walk by himself now. I use the gait belt on him when i walk him.

thanks!

I am on Cymbalta.. it is an anti-depressant but it is also used for neuropathy.. (nerve pain) it also helps to "re-set" our internal sleep clocks.

It can cause some constipation, but papaya enzyme (chewable) and some acidophoous capsules (kept in fridge) and increasing fiber help.

I tried the new antidepressant Prestiq.. the first week I felt GREAT and had so much energy, but after a few days, really had a hard time sleeping. they are extended relase tablets so cannot be cut.. I tried one evry other day.. that worked.. then after the 2 nd week... I felt "mean, agitated. kind of angry) so I went off.. I am now back on the Cymbalta..

I think the anger etc can be ..an over dose of Seronotin.

If you get a physiatrist.. i sure hope the one you have is better than the one I saw.. i only saw her 2 times.. and it was pretty useles.

I prefer my family Dr or a nurologist.

I was reading about the different pain meds. I am on Oxycodone 20 mg long acting for the past 3-4 years and Xanax 2 mg loong acting for the same amount of time. I am also on Neurontin, Keprra, and Baclofen max doses. I sometimes don't feel enough pain from the Dystonia and pones strrokes so I skip the oxy. I tol my MD about this an he said that I didn't feeel like any withdrawal because I wasn't needing it at that time. He said when your body truly needs it for actual pain you won't crave it and I found that to be true. Are any of you on this type medication?

Thankss

We have gone to a pain clinic. we have gone to a neurologist, we have gone to a rehab doctor who recently tried acupuncture but it didnt help. At the pain clinic they said the pain comes from the injury to the brain from stroke. although the pain wasn't as bad until he broke his hip last year. He cannot take anything for pain except tylenol and advil. Everything he has tried he has all the BAD side effects. Anger, depression and whatever you can get bad. So at the moment we are still on a quest to find something that will help heal and alleviate the pain. I read everything possible about stem cell research as that may be the answer for him. We can only pray that something will heal and start to work. thanks for your help and comments. Trudy
