Stop! Take a Deep Breath! Relax!!

I spent several hours online yesterday morning trying to help a friend search for missing classmates so we can contact them about the 45 year high school reunion scheduled for next August. I’m not actually on the committee, but offered to help out in any way that I could. I have managed to track down a couple dozen addresses and some phone...

Moving Ahead with Plans

Icon 5 Comments
In spite of the horrible housing market in our area right now, I am continuing to post "house for sale" ads on craigslist and finding new and more creative ways to advertise. Offering free cable, internet and phone for a year hasn't attracted any attention (other than realtors wanting to list it), so I have to come up with a new ad...

Did I Miss Something?

Icon 4 Comments
It's a busy world we live in, people speeding by daily on the street behind us and we sit and watch them go on with their busy lives. Have I missed out on something? I guess I could have been right along with them, going through the daily routine of so called living, but maybe would have ended up with a heart attack or stroke...

Home Health Costs

Icon 3 Comments
We've had the new home health agency only a month and now they are starting to bill me for extra little charges like the ten minute phone call that I got from the "case manager" who called to ask about changing the schedule (their problem, not mine). I knew lawyers billed for phone calls, but this was ridiculous. The bill shows...

Harmony Lane

Icon 2 Comments
I am taking Gary to a social gathering tonight at a local senior housing manor - they call it Harmony Lane. It's for frail elderly and their caregivers - a casual gathering of fun, food, friendship and entertainment. I hope he enjoys it as he has been bugging me to get him out in spite of the hot weather. The place isn't far from us -...

Need A Little Cheese With That Whine??

Icon 3 Comments
I'm wondering how many people have had jobs where they could make their own hours, dress as they pleased, and complain about every little detail without really having to do much. I know I've never had one like that and not sure I could have taken any pride in doing so anyhow.

The new home health agency has sent out the same gal since we...

Short-Term Memory

Icon 13 Comments
The most difficult part of Gary's stroke recovery for me as a caregiver is the short-term memory loss. Aside from dealing with the physical disabilities, the emotional loss of a partner to stroke survival, and the fatigue from caring for that partner, the frustration mounts daily with the short-term memory loss. What becomes even more...

New Caregivers

Icon 4 Comments
I interviewed a new home health agency yesterday and we will start with new caregivers on Thursday of this week. I told them I would like to start out with 3 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays and see how it goes before adding more hours. We haven't had a caregiver in since March because we were gone to Arizona for a week, and then had plans...

Disability Travels

Icon 2 Comments
We just returned from a week's vacation to North Dakota. Traveling with Gary's disabilities is far from easy, but it beats sitting home waiting for the grass to grow under my feet. Things started out rough. He wasn't ready to get up early so we didn't get out of town until mid-day. Between packing up the motorhome, loading...

I Got a Thank You

Icon 4 Comments
In the six years since Gary had his stroke, I don't think I've ever received a phone call from a single relative just to say "thank you" to me for all that I do for him. I was a bit shocked and surprised when his Aunt Betty called yesterday simply to tell me how much she appreciated everything I do for him. She just lost her...
