A U.S. Food and Drug Administrationanalysis found that Slim-30 Herb Supplement, marketed as a weight-loss aid, "contained undeclared N-Desmethyl Sibutramine and traces of Sibutramine",according to a press release from the agency.
Sibutramine is sold as Meridia in the United States, according to the Merck Manuals Online Medical Library. According to Meridia.net, it is recommended for weight loss only in patients who need to lose 30 or more pounds. The Patient Information Sheet reports that Meridia can cause "a large increase in blood pressure and heart rate".
According to the FDA, this "may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias or stroke."
Sibutramine is a Schedule IV controlled substance, according to Wikipedia. While the drug is FDA-approved, it is being reviewed. Concerns about its safety have caused its suspension in the United Kingdom and the European Union.
Slim-30's manufacturer, J & H Besta Corp. of Hicksville, New York, is voluntarily recalling the product. The affected lot number is 032009, according to the FDA. Consumers should not use this product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
No adverse affects have been reported. Consumers wishing to report problems caused by the drug should contact the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.
