  5. Thank you again Sue for your post. I recall when John was in hospital following his 'shower of strokes' one of our little grandsons celebrated his birthday. His mum always planned lovely parties and it was the first one John was unable to attend. I remember feeling sad that he was unable to be part of the day and even now when John can be there its just not the same. Aphasia and some cognitive deficits can get in the way. Fortunately I think it is me more than John who feels the sadness.
  6. Kathmandu is one of my favourite stores too. I also like looking and dreaming. Jill

    A slow start

Hi Mitch, men's sheds are certainly popular here in Australia aren't they? We have one here in Murray Bridge and I believe many men attend. I did think John may like to give it a 'go' but at the present time we are focussing on one of the local gyms which is an amazing place. It is very inclusive and welcomes all ages, genders, abilities etc. The instructor has a very low key program for John which lasts for about 30 minutes and gives him the opportunity of working one on one which is most helpful as I suspect he would be too distracted if he was in a group setting. Its also good for socialising too - ticking another of the boxes ! Cheers Jillza
  10. Happy Birthday Jillza!

  11. Welcome Mitch. It's good to have another Aussie on this site. I live in Murray Bridge South Australia and am the care giver to my husband John, who had a 'shower' of strokes following endocarditis about 4 1/2 years ago. John now has quite severe aphasia and his disability can be quite frustrating at times for us both. I am sorry things didn't work out with stroke connect but I am certain bloggers on this supportive site will appreciate your comments and contributions. Jill

    100 words

You certainly are a brilliant wordsmith Sue. Thank you for a great piece of writing. Clearly writing is a cathartic experience for you and a delight for us to be able to share your words

    on the beach

Well done Sue ! I identify completely when you say that a carer's focus can be totally on the person being cared for. I find many times when I'm recalling our week's activities, that they mostly focus on John - his appointments, his social activities, his carer coming to the house etc. and that his life has become mine ! Am trying really hard to make sure that I do some things for myself too.
  14. Thank you again Sue for a most meaningful blog. Yes I've lost count of the many times I'd like to have someone make me a cuppa and tell me 'it will be OK' - someone to just share the load. Only one of four of our children lives here in South Australia and as you are aware, young families are so busy with their own families, working, etc. so when I'm able to have our daughter spend some time with us I'm most grateful. Wish it could happen more often !! Thanks again for sharing.
