    Home again

Donna: So good for you. I had my stroke 5 years ago and my wife has gone through some of what you have had to go through. It took a long time for me to become some what independent. I feel that you will be blessed for your care and help you have given him.
  4. Fred, I am a vet also served in the Korean War. I get some benefits from VA but no disability. They say I have too much income. But I do get my hearing aids from them. I worked for IBM for 31 years and have a good retirement... All in all I can’t complain. Best of luck to you. Glenn

    Getting older

I am 80 years and 8 days old. Next month it will 5 years ago I stroked at 4:00am on a Sunday morning. I have read here several times about how progress never stops after a stroke. I have seen this to be true but this last year has taken away all that I gained. I just don’t have the strength I had even last year. Worse than that I just can’t seem to get motivated. I do what I have to do but not much more than that. I sleep 8 to 9 hours a night but still feel tired. I guess that all of you say welcome to my world. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
  6. I am with you on this!!!!!
  7. I sure do know how you feel as I have been there. It is now 4 and a half years after my left side became useless. I have been depressed many times and wondered the same as you is this all there is now. What I have discovered is that by thinking of what needs to be done I can come up with ways to do it. Thanks to duct tape and spring clamps I still get a lot done. I have been able to get back to driving. I walk with a cane. I enjoy going out to eat and I don’t care what others think. Think about the good things each day and don’t dwell on the bad. There are many of us who know the heart break of stroke so you are not alone. Each of us must fight the battle in our on way. Keeping looking up. Glenn

    Driving after stroke

I live in Utah and the doctor had to fill out a “ functional ability evaluation medical report” which I mailed to the DMV. I had to have a visual test but no driving test. I might add that some drivers get irritated at me because I will not drive faster than the speed limit. Seems like no one pays any attention to the speed limits any more.
  9. Just over 4 years ago I had a right side stroke that paralyzed my left side. After months of therapy my physical therapist and my doctor said I could try to drive again. I filed the necessary paper work with the DMV, had a right side turn signal lever installed, and a spinner knob installed on the steering wheel. At first I was a bundle of nerves and concentrated very hard on my driving. It took some time to get comfortable driving again. That was when I realized that I was spending all my time concentrating on what was ahead of me that I was ignoring what was beside or behind me. As I got more comfortable I was able to check in all directions. I am very happy to say I have been driving now for more than 3 years without an accident, or even a close call. Not even a traffic ticket. So I say to all who want to try to drive after a stroke if I can do it so can you.
  10. You are so right, think about the knee. I have found that to walk I have to think of every movement of the left leg. Nothing is automatic any more. So it takes me much longer to walk than it used to. I went in for eye surgery yesterday and the first thing the nurse did was put a bright yellow ribbon on my arm that said “FALL RISK”. That was a wake up call for me as I have began to think I can walk! But others se me as some trying to walk. Every day is a new adventure.
