A Typical Morning

So this morning our DIL leaves for the new house, son is upstairs getting ready for work. I'm watching the news, and Rollin decides he wants McD's for breakfast. I write down what he and I want. He asks "Does Dave want coffee?" "No," I said, "I already asked." End of conversation. He leaves.   Dave comes downstairs right before Rollin walks in with the McD bag. "Oh" he says "Would have been nice if someone asked me if I wanted breakfast." Rollin immediately gets in my face and yells (

Roller Coaster Ride Subsided..........

How can one day be so totally different from another? Yesterday he was obstinate, arrogant, negative.....today he's submissive, obedient, contrite.   He spent most of the day with the DIL, helping at the new house, taking her lunch, etc.   So one day he's a butt hole and the next day a sweetheart?   God, this is hard!

The Roller Coaster Named Stroke

So, yesterday, I'm all "up." We'd had several days in a row of getting along so well, no angry words exchanged, no one's feelings hurt.   Then yesterday DH is a total a**h*** to me. TO ME, the one who tries 24/7 to watch out for him, make sure he takes his meds, help him plan his day, runs interference with the rest of the family, etc.   It started in the car as he drove me to work, and he started it up again when he picked me up. Never have I been so glad to spend 8 hours at my desk

Things I've Learned........

To say that I'm "glad" he had a stroke so I'd learn these life lessons would be a stretch, but indeed, there are lessons for me to learn and this has been the avenue God saw fit to teach them to me!   I've learned that even though he had a stroke and will never be "the same" as he was before in all ways, that I'm grateful that he's still here with me!   I've learned that sometimes I just need to lean over and hold his hand and squeeze it to let him know that (whatever the "thing" at the mo

Something for Me

Yesterday I joined a local chapter of the Red Hat Society, "The Ladies With Hat-i-tude."   I'm really not much of a joiner, but after DH's stroke, and moving 160 miles from where we had lived the last 13 1/2 years, I needed something for just "me." So with that driving me, there I was yesterday at noon, resplendent in my purple shirt and red hat that doesn't go!   It's a swell bunch of ladies, and I felt at home. Of course there was laughter, food and wine, so it was my kind of good time

Fatigue

In the beginning, the DRs told us that pretty much 6 months was the time when he would do the most healing. Well, we're 5 1/2 months into that time frame, and he still has big issues with fatigue. Not just good days and bad days, but days when he's so tired he basically sits on the couch, reads the paper, naps, watches a little tv, tries to get the breakfast dished done by lunch, etc.   He's had three or four of those in a row this week.   Granted, we're in the midst of moving into a

Details About His Stroke

Our last "normal" day was March 31, 2005, but we didn't know that then. We had gone to dinner at a new Mexican Restaurant, watched a little TV, and went to bed. He tells me (I slept through this part) that he woke up about 11pm because he smelled something burning. He looked outside and didn't see anything, and went back to bed.   About 2AM he woke me up, saying something was wrong. He was dizzy, couldn't walk without stumbling, and had what he described at the worst headache in his life.

Rollin's Stroke

Friday, April 08, 2005 Stroke   We had a huge scare last Friday morning. My husband, who just turned 58, had a stroke.   I waited 5 1/2 hours before seeking medical treatment. I thought it was "just" another instance of episodic high blood pressure, and it could wait until the VA clinic opened.   Now I know that he had 4 of the 5 warning signs of a stoke. We are lucky that it appears to have been a "minor" stroke. The doctor told me if it ever happened again, he needed to be taken to
