Larry's SaeboFlex orthosis try

Today Larry's OT tried the SaeboFlex orthosis on his hand. It is a device which enables stretching out the wrist, hand and fingers for use in exercising. (If you Google this, it explains it better than I can). It works for some and not for others as I already knew from those posting on this board. It does not work on electric current but on spring type attachments. The OT put out a bucket of soft medium sized balls for Larry to pick up and then release in another area. Larry had a hard time with this. He was able to grasp the ball sometimes but then to pick it up and move arm over to release was hard. His flexion in fingers was not there. It was good his hand was able to open but the arm tone kept him from using it the way you were suppose to. So, this failed but OT said he could try again at a later time. Some insurance covers this but you have to use it 45 min. twice a day. Naturally, Larry was not dissapointed in that. LOL Well, we just have to go on to things that will help.

Anyway, we are having warmer temps and sunny days. I can't beleive it is the end of September already! This weekend we will go to see our 12 yr. old granddaughter sing in her church. We have missed so many of her activities over the past year or so. Also, we are going to a dinner with a group of Larry's workplace friends and their wives Sunday. Larry will be happy to see them again.

Jules: Ha, from the man who did not want to go out! Sounds like he is filling out his Dance Card pretty quickly these days! I know you are encouraging and prompting, but the fact that he is agreeable is just so wonderful. I just hope it continues. Fall promises to be lovely and I am hoping you can get out for rides and outings before winter closes us down.

Saeboflex: trial sounded very positive. The fact that he could do one of the three parts is every encouraging. Yes, may be a bit early, but glad OT is willing to give it another try down the road.

Good news and good week to both of you. Debbie

Jule,

I TOO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS LARRY THE SAEBOFLEX WASN'T STRONG ENOUGH TO ALLOW FINGERS TO OPEN UP TO RELEASE THE OBJECT. NOW I JUST WEAR A NIGHT SPLINT AND AWAIT THE DAY WHEN PLASTICITY WILL REACH THAT PART OF THE BRAIN THAT CAUSES THE HAND TO OPEN AND CLOSE. GLAD, HE GOT TO TRY THOUGH. THE VISIT WITH OLD FRIENDS SHOULD BE NICE TOO.
