Made it through the New Year
My daughter's wedding was very beautiful, and then the reception afterward at her house. Lots and lots of good food. My 2 grand-daughters stayed overnight with us that night. The next day, the 1st, my husband and Shelby made me a Boston Creme Pie (for my birthday) and Anna and I made Shelby a chocolate chip cookie cake (for her birthday). Later we went to my daughter's for lunch and cake. We took the girls with us to the nursing home that night to see mom. It wasn't a very good night for her. My daughter had gone to see her during the day and wore her wedding gown. Mom seemed just worn out.
Yesterday, when I got there, mom wasn't in her room. I found her in the dining room sitting all alone. I said,"you must be hungry, mom." and she said, "They made me" I asked her if she had to go to the bathroom and she said, "well, yes". So, I took her back to her room and too late, she peed on the floor, pants, shoes, socks, everything soaked. After a change we went back and ate. I was so upset. I said something to the RN and she said, "I'm sorry, there are only 2 aides on today" I was upset the rest of the day and even lost sleep last night.
Today was mom's scheduled care plan meeting. When I got there, I saw there was already one pair of wet jeans in her laundry. We went for a little walk down in the hall (in her w/c) She said she had to go, so I took her into her bathroom. There was bm on the toilet seat, got that cleaned off, pulled her pants down, her pull-up had bm in it, as did the waistband of her pants. So another pair of pants changed. It sounded like she had been on the toilet by herself and had tried cleaning up herself. She was not clean. After some scrubbing, I had her cleaned and dressed again. By that time I was late for the meeting.
I told the RN why I was late and how many times I have found mom wet in the last 2 weeks. It is not the aides fault. 2 aides cannot be expected to give proper care to 32 residents. They have hired several more aides, so hopefully this will help some. I am so thankful that I am able to go every day, because mom would not have an advocate otherwise. Most of the residents there have no one. I was so happy though, when 2 staff members said that they have seen an improvement in mom's memory. I have definitely seen it, but it makes me feel so good when someone else sees it, too, and I told them that. After the meeting and mom and I had lunch, she walked in the hall quite a distance, we sat and rested in the tv room and then walked back to her room. So it was actually a good day today. I just hope the problem of her being wet often will be resolved. Shortage of staff is a problem everywhere and I don't know the solution.
