Walking

Hi friends: Today I walked in the apartment by myself for the first time since my fall a little over a year ago. I overcame the fear and did it! A path is open now to eventually walking without someone watching. I walk with the Bioness L300, a device which replaces an AFO by using e-stim to lift your foot. I feel it has really helped me. I've got far to go to walk anywhere without a PCA, but I've made a beginning. Happy New Year to all.

Hi Henry,

They say that a journey of a thousand miles start with a single step. They say it's not the destination that matters most but the steps along the journey.

Good for you in your beginning. Stay safe and good going!

Henry,

Just keep at it. When I was building walking strength I counted steps and then added a few each day. At first I also had to have someone watching me, but eventually I was able to walk on my own. Eventually I changed to time. I can now walk for over a hour -- I am still slower than most people, but I get there.

At the time I lived across the street from a university. So (weather permitting) I went out every day and used their walks. Timed it so I missed people most of the time. Being outside was really helpful. It is more interesting than being in the house.

BTW, I walk using a rollator. I can walk about the house sans rollator or cane. Everyone (including the cat) knows to not get in my way. Outside, the rollator not only gives me something to hold onto, but it is evident I have a problem so people are usually very careful around me.

Kudos to you!

Bob is getting on the verge of a great improvement in his walking that will point to more liberty for him, also. So, I can appreciate how very wonderful this is for you! Congrats, and like the saying goes, something in motion stays in motion!

That's a big step Henry just keep going and you will have some of what the stroke took from you back!! I had to do the same thing I came home unable to walk at all but soon learned with more out patient therapy and stair climbing trials because I live in a two story home and I had to get up and down daily!!

It always takes a start to expect a finish and you are getting there just as others before you did their thing!!

Thanks, folks, so much for your support. One issue that came up was--what do I do if I knock the cane over? This can happen. My aide solved this by tying a strap around the handle, which I'll practice with in her presence. The strap has room for me to grab a hand hold if necessary. All the best, Henry

Folks: the strap around the handle works fine in the apt., but is no good walking outside. Since I always walk with someone outside, it's not an issue. Lin is right--walking in the fresh air is great and therapeutic in itself! Cheers, Henry
