Cold but sunny

The sun makes everyone feel better even when it's cold. We've had a good week. Dan has been very pleasant since I got home. We went to a museum in Indy today and stopped at Olive Garden for linner, that's what we call a late lunch and early dinner combined. It warmed up to 25 and it was sunny all day.

Dan had his surgery consult yesterday and the surgeon wants to try another med and to go to yet another GI doc for a consultation. We are very fortunate to have IU Medical Center in downtown Indy. Dan's GI doc referred him to the surgeon and the new GI doc with the thought in mind that they're younger, fresh out of school, working at the IU Med Center...maybe they know some new treatments. Every time he goes to a new doc it's like starting all over again. I'm not compaining...this is a good thing, I just get weary repeating the same story over and over. I keep a detailed medical history on Dan, but they don't seem to want to read it, they'd rather hear it.

I think I want a puppy. Jeff has the cutest, sweetest little Chihuahua. Because Jeff works late three days a week he brings Skeeter to work with him on those days. He's about 9 months old now and he is so much fun and has so much personality. Jeff is moving next week and he's asked if I'll watch Skeeter for him Thurs and Fri evenings. Problem is, Dan doesn't like dogs, although I think he's warming up to this one. I'm not sure what breed I want so I'm starting to research. Of course, I want the PERFECT puppy: one that doesn't shed, that will sit on my lap but doesn't require constant petting, a non-yapper and jumper. Any suggestions? Oh yeah, one that doesn't pee, poop, or puke would be absolutely fantastic!!! lol :hahaha:

Have a good week everyone!

LOL Mary Jo. Another suggestion, try a cat. Maybe rescue one - more independent, litter box so no poo or pee issues and they love to cuddle - well mostly.

Because Bruce goes to bed so early we do a lot of "linner" here. I will have to introduce the term to him. He loves word play.

Bruce would love a dog, but I have my hands full right now and they do require more attention, but I still have it on my "future considerations" list. We have several friends with wonderful dogs and they are all welcome here. Kira goes upstairs and she is fine with her water and afghan and Bruce just plays with the dogs while they are here. I know that is the bet pet for him, but right now we have our Kira and she just adores both of us.

We just started with a new PCP for Bruce just this week. Reliving all this is so hard and like you, I supplied his medical record. So he will undergo some tests and start some new meds, but, like you, I focus on the positive.

Let us know what you decide. Good week - Debbie

Mary Jo,

My mother got a puppy recently and we all adore her! (the puppy) Out of curiosity I came home and looked up the breed--the Shih-tzu.

Females typically only grow to 7-9 lbs, though they have long hair they do not shed and though they require daily brushing (we do it at night while watching t.v,) their hair is such that it is easy to brush. The best I can offer in the poop and pee dept. is they are very smart and easy to train. The love lap time but are equally happily entertained with their toys. They love children and visitors and are very sturdy dogs, with the biggest thing to watch for is to keep their eyes cleaned of goo and hair with some warm water and a cloth. They are very energetic and playful (silly) but don't require a large amount of running space so they're suitable for apartment living or small yards. They're not yappy although the will bark out "orders" to their family if the family doesn't establish dominance and firmness with them. They are extremely family oriented and need an "alpha" and if you won't be alpha, they'll be glad to. This alpha role from what I've read and experienced with Molly isn't heavy handed but really just a firm NO! As I said, they are very smart. No shedding, no yapping, lap dogs but not clingy...did I deliver or what!? Sorry about the poop and pee thing...best I could do on short notice.

My Bro in Law has a Shih-tzu. She has the little girl syndrome and acts like a princess. She is funny. Now if you don't mind a little shedding I would suggest an English Bulldog. Ours is named Daisy and besides her rugged good looks they are very entertaining. She is a little energetic, but typically just kinda lays around. LOL We take her camping and she sits in a chair next to me . She likes everyone and is scared of everything. Good luck in your search.

Mary Jo, cold and sunny here too but going up to 60's next week. That is St. Louis weather. We will be back down to freezing after that.

As for the dog, I too am partial to cats. No worry about taking them out to do their duty and they are very cuddly. They can spit up hairballs tho. lol Our one granddaughter has a dashund and a little chihuahua. The chihuahua (Skittles) is white and so cute, but he is afraid of people. I think he was abused and came from a shelter. The Dashund, Sadie, was hard to potty train and yaps a lot. My neighbors have two poodles and they seem to be good dogs. They just let them out back to do their duty and they come right back. lol Maybe you can try fostering a pet first to see how that plays out. I love my other neighbors Golden Retriever too.

I'm glad you had a nice vacation.

I hope you get good news with the younger doctors just out of school. I like the young physical therapist fresh out of school they seem to have all the latest methods of doing things and they don't mind you asking them about certain techniques they are using.

We have a little female Shih Tzu, brown and white we got at 2 weeks old for my grand daughter after she brought her school grades up and now for a year or so she has been on the honor role each time.

The puppy made one year on 1 January and she is not hard to maintain but the vet bills, care and grooming can cost a pretty penny. Plus we had her in puppy training school when she made three months to learn sit, stay, leave it, no, don't jump up on people and OK now she is almost ready for obedience training to understand commands otherwise you will need a leash when she is outside because she goes where she want to go. I don't think she knows how to bark yet. She is trained to the puppy pad to poop and tee-T if we don't take her outside but she lets us know when she want to go out and when she want to eat.

The hair can get 3 inches long but we keep it cut some and she don't shed but I brush her daily. You would think it's my dog! When I nap she does too and will check on me to make sure I'm alive I guess by putting her paws on the side of my bed making noises. Then she goes back to her little cradle and sleep some more. She loves to ride on my scooter to the mailbox, to Pet smart and up and down the sidewalk and run around in the back yard playing by herself and she loves people! Her name is Princess!!

Oh my, thanks to all of you for the puppy input! I had a cat years ago and was a really bad cat mom, I just never really warmed up to her. I've heard daschunds are hard to potty train. Right now I'm thinking a mini daschund, chihuahua, or shih tzu. My problem with a chihuahua is that I have to look up the spelling every time I type the breed!!! lol I'm leaning more and more towards a shih tzu.

.did I deliver or what!? Sorry about the poop and pee thing...best I could do on short notice.

Jamie, you sure did deliver!! Shih Tzu is a breed I've been thinking about. I've got a friend with one and she (the dog) is just adorable...(the friend is nice but I wouldn't call her adorable ;-) lol)

Fred, She sounds like a real Princess, I think she earned her name! Are you sure she isn't your dog??? lol
