I don't really have any advice for how you can work more objectively with your father-in-law, but the fact that you recognize this as a problem that needs to be resolved that you've taken a giant step forward to finding the answer. Welcome to blogging! Glad to see you here.

Now as to your other problem you asked about, my suggestion is take it back to the basics. We survivors become aware there is a problem we need to work on, we focus on the problem and constantly remind ourselves how to act. For example, I lost impulse control. After I stroked I became very verbally abusive. I knew it was a problem, so I kept reminding myself about appropriate behavior in social situations. I've also relearned to bite my tongue. I can't report honestly that I've overcome the problem 100%, but I am better then I once was. It is worth a shot.
