Mom Back in Hospital

Mom had an appointment with her PCP this afternoon. I have been concerned for some time about her low heart rate. Her previous PCP didn't seem concerned about it. The heart rate always tested low since before her stroke. I am talking about anywhere between 32 to 48. At her appointment today I brought up the heart rate numbers that I documented along with the BP. The nurse went and got a heart rate monitor. It test very low. Then they did an EKG and sent the results to the cardiologist department at the hospital. It was decided that she should go to the ER immediately. They admitted Mom to the hospital. She will be getting a pacemaker tomorrow.

I feel good about this. She has been very tired and sleeps a lot. She keeps wanting to know when she will feel better. I am optimistic about this.

She will probably come home about 24 hours after the procedure. Now I have some time to get some things done out in "the world." She is a lot of work, but I miss her already.

Hi

Your mom is lucky to have you and I hope you get some rest for yourself and some things done because she may be feeling better and want to do this and go here and make up for energy lost lol. I know you are worried but at least they are addressing the problem now.

I hear that pacemakers make all the difference and I will think positive energy and prayers for you both.

I know what you mean, as a caregiver myself.  Sounds like this will be a great improvement though, isn't it strange how different doctors diagnose things so differently?

John :

this is great. you are amazing caregiver & son & medical advocate for your mom. I think that's why every survivor needs family member like you. I am sure mom will be back in action once she comes home. So you also rest till then.

The good news is that Mom had the pacemaker installed late this afternoon. It was almost 2 hours. The doctor came to talk to me when it was finished. He said it went beautifully with no complications. That's what I was praying for.

The bad news is that Mom almost didn't make it to the operating room because she became very agitated and disoriented and confused. When I left Tuesday night she was pretty good. A lot of plain talk without much confusion. When I came back this afternoon she was out of her mind. I am not too happy with the nurse. She said Mom has no quality of life so the pacemaker should be cancelled and she should just go home(and wait to die). When I tried to explain her true condition she just talked over me and didn't care what I said. She's an idiot. I never encountered anyone like that before in that hospital.

I think a lot of Mom's confusion stems from the fact that she didn't eat since Tuesday morning and didn't get much sleep. They don't want to give her food or pills until their speech therapist checks her swallowing. I explained that she had 3 speech therapists in the past 2 1/2 months and that she was eating regular food and swallowing pills at home. They don't care about that.

I feel like I made a lot of progress at home. I think she has had such a cognitive setback that I will have to start all over again when she gets back home.

good news about the pacemaker. very bad news about the nurse.  hopefully with the new pacemaker gains that mom makes will continue.

kind regards to your mom who is very fortunate to have you as a son.

I am hoping that with the pacemaker Mom will be getting proper blood flow to the brain which should improve cognitive abilities. (said as a lay person)

Thanks for your comments.

Mom slept most of the day today. I spent about 5 hours in her room just to be with her, but she was out.

She really needs the rest. She looked like a zombie yesterday. It's such a shame. Tuesday started out so good. We had a nice breakfast. Later Mom washed up and got dressed to go to the doctor and expected to be back home. She looked really nice. 24 hours later she was a zombie. I can't wait to get her back in the routine at home.

Mom came home late yesterday afternoon. It's more work than before because she can't use the walker due to her arm being in a sling. We have a follow-up visit with the cardiologist on Wednesday morning.

John, pleased Mom operation went well. Sorry about the nurse she is a fool! My aunt who  96yrs  knee had swollen, and she was in a lot of pain, at the ER, a doctor told her " she was old, and get ready to die"  what is wrong with the medical people today?

Praying for you and Mom

John, you should report that idiotic nurse. She was way out of line, not to mentioned well beyond her level of expertise. I'm glad your mom got the pacemaker and hopefully is now back on the road to recovery. She is indeed lucky to have you as her caregiver, her son and her advocate.
