Oh no, I didn't shoot myself on the first row, so it is NOT tatting!   The only tatting I've done was a cross bookmark in the '70s.    Then I gave that to hubby's grandmother.   I dabbled a little bit more with it, but the frustrating thing about tatting is that if you get a mistake, it is a knot that you have to get loose in tiny tiny thread, often resulting in a break for newbies.   Which is where I stopped on my next effort on another cross (right side mostly done) from sewing maching thread:
