Swim, baby, Swim
Well, Bruce finished off his 2015 therapy allowance today and he had great results this round.
Bruce decided in the Spring that he no longer wanted Botox in his arm or leg. We didn't have his arm/hand evaluated this time around. But he continues to Estim twice daily. The goal for PT was to work through the overtoning in his right thigh, strengthen his right knee and learn to work without the Botox, relieving some of the toning in his right thigh.
We had just gotten back from New Mexico where he did walk a bit with his roommates. Day one of PT, therapist asked Bruce if he could walk and sure enough, he stands with the hemi and takes off. Well, who knew? Certainly not me - LOL.
Most of you have followed his progress in the pool. Bruce did not know how to swim, prestroke, so it was terrifying for him to get into the pool, regardless of the flotation devices, when he knew his right side didn't work. With the help of his therapists, some wonderful CNAs and some help from me, we have done aqua therapy and even Aquasize - which is private pay and someone has to be with Bruce.
Bruce has had all of the therapists at his Outpatient Clinic and really likes all of them. Three weeks ago, we were advised that his therapy time was coming to an end. And sure enough, in true Bruce fashion, he gets into the pool with just a life belt - weights on both ankles and some flotation tubes and off he goes. Therapist and lifeguard never got in the pool with him. Of course, Debbie had 911 on hold! After shower and dressing, up to PT where he took the hemi and walked to the "gym."
In light of all this, I set up four more sessions for Bruce where Bruce and I would pay. With some advice from friends here, I also requested that Medicare be billed for these sessions - one never knows.
Bruce continued to improve those four sessions. We talked and both of us know Bruce will not work out for me and continuing Aquasize would probably mean divorce court for us - LOL. Still his therapists were just so supportive. We have two offers from the lifeguards to supervise Bruce in the pool and then do shower and dress. Bruce said he probably would not shower with strangers any longer and the time periods are not optimal for Bruce - late afternoon.
My game plan is to take the next two weeks and get some other issues resolved: appointments, follow ups, some appointments for me and then Bruce and I will discuss this again. There has been some carry over here at home, so I really have to take this seriously. First time in six years that something seems to be connecting.
So good news all around and I am so proud of him. Will keep you all updated. Debbie
