pt parade

all in all, rehab was going well, pt was the slowest part, due to my bad knees, it was going much slower than id hoped, that and still not being able to feel the floor under my left foot... both my roommates were able to use canes when they left, while i was (and am) still in a chair - the real problem was that whereas my knees had hurt when overused prior to the stroke and id just ignore it, or pop aleve, now instead of hurting, my left one felt like it was going to buckle, not a good feeling when i already had no confidence in that leg, plus i still had that slippery afo and no shoes i could wear with them, we'd also discovered that it was way too big for me, seems that they'd made the cast for it right before they'd realized i had the blood clot, and thus my leg was all swollen - they tried to make it a little smaller, was better;but still not right.... they also rigged up a cast shoe with some non-slip material so i could use that and not be slipping everywhere... of course there were still other obstacles to progressing walking, when trying to use the walker, since i couldn't feel that i was holding onto it, my hand would;d periodically just let go of it - cant remember if i mentioned out proud i was when i first managed to hold a container of applesauce in my left hand while i pulled the foil top off with my right, of course not being able to feel it in my hand as soon as i looked away to pick up a spoon, my hand opened up and splat on the floor.... i think the nurse was less impressed with that achievement than i was smile.gif - anyway, back to the walker, they rigged it up for me so that i could tell if my hand slipped off, velcro around the walker and attached to one of those wheelchair gloves, the theory being that it would stay on longer;but if not, id hear it detach and could put it back on - they also tried attaching my had with an ace bandage;but decided that was a bit of overkill - on top of that, whenever they had me try using the walker, i needed 3 pts with me, talk about a parade, one would walk with me watching my hand and doing the running instructions... one on the rolling stool staring at me knee in case it started to go and the third following right behind with the wheelchair. just in case - when i was discharged they sent the walker home with me... with bright yellow tape all over it with "use only for standing not walking" warnings, lol i'm thinking thats part of the reason i'm still in the chair, oh well, someday
