Another Unexpected Change

My wife and I recently learned that she can no longer have a mammogram because of the disabling effect of her right-side ischemic stroke. Her left arm is too rigid to be positioned so that a mammogram can be performed. The good news is, she's now 70 and our doctor says that at that age mammograms aren't really necessary. While that is good to know I can't help but wonder about younger woman. Are they left to just roll the dice or what? I'm told that an MRI can be used to examine breasts and is actually more accurate than a mammogram. But something tells me insurance companies would balk at covering such an exam. Has anyone ever encountered this? Anyone have any information to share?

Some things change with age, and the way we think about life changes too.  I am glad to be heading for 70, seems as if at that time life slows down a bit so you can enjoy it more.  Hope you and your wife find that too.

Well, I turned 70 back in 2014 and to me it's just another decade. But I'm lucky to have a good marriage and good health and a great family. That makes a huge difference. Just remember, getting old may suck but it sure beats the alternative.

I had one this year. I had to be able to stand up,balance, and put my arms in right position. Since this is difficult for me, I used my walker that luckily fit under the machine so I could hold on,sit down as needed.

I was able to put my arms up to get the print. They were very accommodating. If I could not get this done and I needed it, then insurance would need to let me get another diagnostic method regardless of cost. With the national attention about breast cancer I am sure reputable insurance will be thrilled to advocate prevention. We hope.

Glad it worked out regardless for your wife.
