The Day My World Changed
The Day My World Changed started just like any other
I went to work and did my job and ate my usual supper
I sat outside along the bank of the beautiful creek where I lived in peace
Petting my cats as they chased their tails and caught bugs flying through the
August air.
I saw my nephews and chatted with my sister as the night began to fall
We tucked the boys into their beds and retired to the living room
I watched TV with my sister until the hour grew late
We both had jobs that started early so I headed towards my place
It was just across the trailer park from where my sister lived
And I enjoyed the sounds of night and the creek that soothed my ears
I stayed up until the cats were fed and started for my bed
I didn't notice anything except a pounding in my head
I figured that I was too long in the sun and got a glass of water
Went to my room and laid myself down in quiet blissful slumber
But sometime in the black of night I suffered a lightening strike
A stroke had come into my head and stole my carefree life
The morning came and went to noon and still I did not wake
They say I answered my front door so no one thought it strange
That I was wearing all my clothes that winter cold required
Or that I was dragging my left leg or that I was listing to one side
Until the phone call the boss made as he told me later on
That I was not making any sense and he thought he'd better holler
The ambulance came with my boss in tow my family came though I didn't know
They took me to the hospital where my stroke was captured quick
They said I was young and would be okay
They said you'll heal real quick.
And that day they watched the atomic blast of fallout from my stroke
As it robbed me of my job, my freedom and my home.
That was a day I will never remember, though
I'm told what happened by those who were there
That I did not know them or where I lived
I couldn't tell them my name or my phone
All I could do was stare blankly at them
And tell them I only remember the headache I had
And how cold I had felt
And that I survived a stroke.
