Mama's Got a Brand New Bag

I hadn't planned on it, but today was a shopping day ... my husband took me out to buy a new handbag. I really didn't need one, or so I thought. But my husband explained to me that I needed a bag with an extra-long strap, so that I can put it over my head and across my body - that way I can carry my own purse hands-free.

I guess my husband is tired of carrying my handbag when I insist that I can't leave home without it. Score one for the adult in the family without stroke deficits! I might have arrived at that solution on my own ... eventually. But who knows!

It's a dark red bag with a little sass. Looks great with my sweatpants and tee-shirt uniform for physical therapy. I suppose I am going on and on about this purchase, because it is the one and only new thing I have bought since my stroke.

Now I just have to find a dollar bill and a couple of coins to put in the zipper money pouch inside the bag. Funny, I haven't had my own money since the stroke, either.

Oh, before I forget, does anyone need a new key ring? I just happen to have a new one, in a dark red color with a little sass.

It's funny the quirky little changes that a stroke brings into our lives. I had to change purse styles too. My new criteria for purses is one with handles that I can loop on the back of my husband's wheelchair. And they have to be just "so" in length or the purse drags on the wheel, making it hard to push. I see woman pushing wheelchairs at speech class and they put their purses in their husband's lap. Before the stroke anytime I suggested that Don hold my purse for a second he would act like I wanted to give him a loaded diaper so I didn't want to have him have to hold it now post-stroke. We all do what we have to do do, don't we.

I've always preferred a hand bag with a shoulder strap anyway, so mine works fine on the back of Ray's wheelchair, I've got shopping bags that fit the chair too so I can carry extra and not make as many trips out to the car.

Ray gets to have $50 in his wallet, if I need it I use it and replace it. I call him my "banker", he enjoys the responsibility. He has a spare car key too which has got me out of a jam a couple of times.

It was raining today and I made four trips to the car park, got damp each time. If you hear a sneeze, that will be me.

Thanks for the reminder..........I need to shop for a new purse also. Mine got so weighed down last week when I won money at the casino, it actually broke the strap. Imagine That!!!! :roflmao: I took Gary up for the day to get away from the crying at home, and we came home $1,000 ahead. I think I can afford a new purse!

I think it is so important to honor Don's wishes and feelings pre-stroke (at times when he has no post-stroke opinion about the situation). He is so lucky to have such a caring and loving spouse/caregiver.

I want to share your comments with my husband. Sometimes I think my husband forgets about the little things that might matter to me, because he is so overwhelmed with the big day to day problems we both face.

I would really feel needed if I had a spare key to carry, or a couple of bucks in my pocket.

Thanks for sharing. Achoo! God bless you.

Now you're speaking my language! Pre-stroke I loved going to the casino - I only play slots, but I so enjoy it.

I've had a couple of trips to Las Vegas, but most of my casino trips have been day trips to Charlestown West Virginia - I don't live too far from there.

I'd love to go again, but I know that our money is too scarce right now to risk it. But congratulations to you! Now get that new purse - you deserve it!

The best part of your new bag is the sass. I had Rod start carrying his wallet again and he get about $25 to hang on to that way if he wants to get something special at the store he can. I also gave him a set of keys one of which is for his scooter.
