To The People Who Tease Me
As I am now, you may yet be
So I'm asking you nicely
Don't Tease Me Please
And get your laughs out of taunting me
Not caring that once I was just like you
Young and active, productive and smart
And that just like you I have a heart
It can be broken and tears can fall
I'm just like you just different that's all
I ask you please don't laugh at me
Because I'm not what I used to be
One day you may join the souls like me
Whose lives are changed by injury
Or illness that erases everyday things
Like walking, talking, and remembering
So I ask of you to understand
And if you don't and tease me more
I may just smile for I know how
Fate may change you into someone like me
A person with a disability
And leave you at the mercy of people like you
Who cannot stop staring and saying unkind words
Don't tease me or judge me for the things that I do
Or taunt me for slurring and stuttering words
Stop staring at my walker and my aide as we shop at the store
Or giving mean comments as I ride the cart up the isles
And giving rude gestures at parking spots I accquire
I'm sure you would use them if you needed to
And I'd love to leave them for your use
But since I'm not able to I'd appreciate it greatly
If you'd smile and say hello
And enjoy my smile in return.
It would make your day brighter
And make my world turn.
