it's spring, so why not be reborn?

the combination of my blog almost melting into page 3, and my good friend Sue inquiring about my absence from these blog pages, has inspired me to blog again. i am almost psyched to take pictures of all of my new CZ jewelry and post them in the Gallery so that Jean can see them; when i receive the last of these baubles, i just might do that.

as i posted on the board, i just returned from a conference called "Neuroscience Meets Rcovery" in Las Vegas this morning. It was a three-day conference which focused on recent developments in neuroscience that are relevant to the understanding and tretment of substance dependence (addiction.) One of the things that was really interesting is that each speaker stated unequivocably that there is growth of new neurons (nerve cells) from neural stem cells, which we all have, when the brain is recovering from physical, chemical, and environmental trauma as well as recovery of surviving neurons that are damaged. these cells change from stem cells to neurons in a period of two to three months, and is facilitated by continued exposure to novel and surprising (unexpected) stimuli . this is the first conference that i have attended where this was stated unequivocably as a fact instead of a hypothesis.

therefore, some of the recovery that we stroke survivors/caregivers see in ourselves and others might be secondary to the growth of new neurons and not to the rewiring of surviving circutry.

given my nearly complete recovery from a stroke which left me, according to my discharge papers, which aphasia and right hemiplegia, and given my dad's progress from a persistent vegetative state to a lucid, scheming mind, i kind of anecdotally knew that this was true.

i spoke about this with my parents on Saturday from Las Vegas. my dad was immediately psyched into practicing more new things so that he can eat more and walk with support. visions of chopped hamburger danced in his head all night, and he was so psyched that he couldn't sleep. he is making more effort with his speaking and my mom will have him read the paper again as an exercise (he spontaneuosly started reading a bit several weeks ago.) it's amazing what some men will do for food.

John sat in on most of the conferences on Friday and Saturday since the conference masters could care less about him not paying admission. he is also psyched about what he heard and is probably going to go on SSD if his program offers him an additional six months of treatment. this is a big change from him wandering around aimlessly in Brooklyn last week, but his shrink put him back on Cymbalta and he's a lot happier. i guess that he needs that serotonin in his cocktail.

as for me, i feel a little sad that i don't have anywhere to fly to this week after going to conferences for the last two weeks, and i feel a little glad that i don't have anywhere to fly to this week after going to conferences for the last two weeks.

i had an evaluation of my left knee last Wednesday by an orthopedist who was hired by the attorneys of the person who hit my car. i went there with the paralegal from John's attorney and John, who promptly got lost when going to my car to put money in the meter, woorying all three of us (he had an appointment for an evaluation as well, which had to be rescheduled.) the orthopedist told me that i am functioning a lot better than my kneewould lead him to believe, and that my knee is significantly damaged. he implied (not stated) that i get a second opinion with a reputable orthopod (not my orthopod, who discharged me when he thought my no-fault insurance had run out) and a repeat MRI with state-of=the-art equipment. i will put that on my list of things to do. hey, maybe cartilage cells get reborn, just like nerve cells.

Sandy,

I'm trying my best to keep up with you in the ring department. I just bought seventh one. But three of mine are eternity bands with CZ chips. I like wearing two of them with the engagement style in the center. I've got to start branching out in CZ earings now.

P.S. Glad to see you blogging again.

Sister Sandy,

Thanks for sharing that interesting little tidbit of info. It reminds me almost of a pregnancy of neurons.....

Anyway, I feel left out of the cz jewelery craze, guess I've got to start showing Bill some sites.

Go to this site if you need the "I'm retired" prices. Their quality is pretty good for the money and I can't tell them from the real thing. Their service is great, too. A lot of the rings on E-bay come from there.
