Attended my first Survior Meeting

I finally decided I had to do SOMETHING, so attended a stroke survivor group meeting held at Kaiser. After a brief time together, they split into two groups, surviviors, and caregivers (that's me!). They of course wanted to hear my story (I kinda felt like I was at an AA meeting, you know..."Hi, my name is Susan. (~_~)

It was amazing to see them all start to nob and smile as I related me story....been there, done that, all of them! It was encouraging to know that!

I came away with a new sense of what the stroke had really done to Rolly, and a few coping strategies. Hopefully it makes a difference in our relationship, and the general atmosphere around the house!

It is good to get with other caregivers and find we all have similar problems (though some people's seem MUCH worse). When Ray and I did the six week Tuesday meetings in a row with the Community Stroke Support Team I noticed a difference in my attitude as I was able to get an overview of Ray's condition and my reaction to it rather than just doing everything as a knee jerk reaction to the presenting situation.

I guess like me that you are now seeing the broader picture 16 months down the track for you 7 years for me, where you know what Rolly has got back, what he will get back and how you will live with that situation.

Hang in there, there are still good times ahead. And maybe now he is posting recipes again you can keep him busy in the kitchen.

I still feel caregivers are the most influencial people in a survivor's life, especially wives or husbands. Without my wife, I could not have made it. I can see when the mean hateful attitude is presented it causes resentment.

I'm sure the same goes for parents/kids or a combination thereof. It just feels closer than hospital employees and others paid to come in and care for your loved ones. That's just my experiences. In some cases, there is no other choices to make.

First, I am so glad you are both going to these meetings, as as time goes by, you'll meet alot of new people in same situation, you'll learnnew and better ways to do things, and most important, you'll be closer and appreciate each other more

GOOD LUCK, GOD BLESS
