Sunday

Well I didn't get anything done yesterday as planned as I made a STUPID mistake. I decided to make a zucchini and tomato lasagna. I got my mandolin (sharp blade) out and started cutting the zucchini, got to the bottom of the piece and thought I should be using the handle to hold onto the zucchini and made one more slice. Here's to stupidity - brought the zucchini through and then proceeded to slice the top part of my thumb off. Of course, I bled all over the place (except my slices of zucchini).

After 45 minutes and still bleeding I called my girlfriend to take me to the walk in clinic. Still bleeding they took me to the suture room. Now I felt like fainting - blood no problem - stitches and I want to faint - go figure. The doctor came in looked at my cut and said "No stitches."

He got it to stop bleeding and bandaged me up, advising I should get rid of my mandolin (not going to happen). Then advised that I can't get it wet of ten days to two weeks. How do I shower??!!? He told me to use my right hand. Ha, ha He looked at my file and said to get someone to help me (realized my right hand doesn't work). Still not sure who to ask, I guess it's standing over the sink and sponge baths.

Went and got all the neccessary do-dats he wanted me to get and went home. Now I needed to keep my arm above my head. Easier said than done.

I got the lasagna made and in to the stove! Using the blade protector and no thumb!!!

My son called at 7pm and I advised my chef what I had done and he had to come home, feed me and DO the dishes. Was he happy??!! Cooking all day and then coming home and doing it again - oh well. At least it wasn't as bad as when he did his thumb in a couple of years ago. Still gave me trouble - I guess I deserved it.

So here it is, Sunday, and it started to bleed over night. Today is a day of not much to do except resting my hand. Sounds like fun - NOT! :im stupid:

Have to stop typing as my hand is throbbing. Bye

Hi Cindy,

Sorry about your cut. Glad you did not need stitches.

I occasionally cut myself in the kitchen. Only a couple of times badly. I have a mandolin, but don't use it often. But, I have cut myself with knives. I now don't ever try to get the last part cut.

I either use it thicker or eat. Just not worth it to risk of a bad cut. My reaction time is not as quick as it was pre stroke. It's like I can't move my hand out of the way fast enough. I also have a problem with shredders. Again I just don't shred to the end of the piece of vegetable.

Those of us who are cooks can't quit can we?

Hi Lin,

You are right. I did throw the last piece away, just not fast enough!

And you are right about being a cook. I can't have my resident chef being better than me (although he is).

I don't think I'll use the mandolin again. As for knives, I have a healthy respect for them after I saw what Jordan has done to himself. Anything that needs fine chopping I let him do!

YOU ARE NOT STUPID!!!!! :2cents:

I did same thing, but using a canopener! OUCH

Having the use of only one hand does present problems, but certainly makes one think QUICK for survival, if not anything else

Glad your son could help - it probably made him feel good

Just a thought, you can but your cheese already shredded

Hi Cindy:

I'm sorry that you cut yourself. I can understand the pain and trauma that you experienced. I 'understand' your panic and the fear of stitches.

After I had my stroke, and in need of a different career, I went to culinary school. YES, we used knives. We spent two weeks, doing nothing but cutting, dicing and making 'fancy cuts' with vegetables; cutting and slicing meats and fish. I cut myself, on my left finger. BECAUSE I have NO feeling, I didn't know it. Just a small cut, but it bleed for almost an hour.

I was afraid to use a knife the way chefs do - with the blade 'against' your knuckles. I've been 'corrected' several times, stating that I would 'lose points' IF I didn't start 'doing it right'. I just informed the chef that I would - but let me on 'my timing' (meaning when I WAS comfortable). I eventually 'got it together' with knife blade against knuckle.

I also use a mandoline. They ARE nice, they allow you to make 'uniform' cuts, and they ARE SAFE, IF you use the safety guard. The manufacturer spent money to have the 'safety guard' made and put in each box. I use my mandolin to make French Onion Soup, slice tomatoes when needed. If I'm doing a vegetable tray, I'll slice cucumbers with the mandolin.

I've been using a mandolin for 3 years, and I have yet to cut myself using it. WHY ?? Because I USE the safety guard EVERY time. When I slice something, when the safety guard is down as far as it goes, what food is still on the 'prongs' gets pitched.

I know I 'rambled' on, just giving my :2cents:

Thanks Denny!!! As I said, I was stupid (not using the safety)!

Glad to hear you can use both hands while cutting w/knive. You and Jordan (my son) deserve a hand for that. :Clap-Hands: :Clap-Hands:

This chef can only use one hand - left - and always am careful - EXCEPT FOR YESTERDAY.

Believe me I will always use the safety when using my mandolin from now on.

Take care,

Cindy

:2cents: :2cents: In giving you my 2cents, you just had an accident and are NOT STUPID -

This happens to us all as I have the use of just 1 hand, and I sliced my good thumb opening a can -

So, you are amongst friends

BEST

I think I posted about this knife thing awhile ago, too.

My experience didn't have a "bloody" ending - but scared the liver out of me!

Bill was always my chef. He has a way of knowing what herbs to put with what meat to make it delicious. Me, I have to have the recipe.

Anyway, he decided he wanted to help me get dinner. Keep in mind, he has no vision on the right and this makes it REAL interesting with depth perception, as well as queing in on exactly where something is - try putting your hand over one eye - everything is a little "off" where you think it is!

I had gone to the back of the apartment - all right, the bathroom. When I came out he had the biggest knife we own and was just ready to slice something - I don't even remember what now. He scared me to death since the knife wasn't where he thought it was and one slice would have nicely removed the tip of his finger, I'm sure....

Cindy, I put myself in your place and tried to imagine showering with a plastic bag on one hand, holding it high with the water running over my head.....For me, not a pretty picture!!! Cars have it EASY!!

Hi Cindy,

I agree, you're not stupid. I have the use of both my hands and when I used to cook I would cut myself occaisonally. I'm a cg. and my husband does the cooking again. He loves it and I don't. Lucky me!!

Anyway, regarding the bathing thing. When he was in the hospital they had this stuff to wash with and didn't need rinsing if you coudln't rinse. It works in hair too! I don't know if they have it in the stores but it's great stuff!! Maybe you could get it from your local hospital if you can't find it in the store.

Take Care....... :)

Hi everyone!

Try this again. Takes for the responses. I did have a shower today. Saran Wrap and a elastic don't do the trick of keeping my thumb dry. But at least I'm clean!!!

As for the "stupid" remark - I guess I should have said "it was a stupid mistake made by a bonehead." I had the safety right beside me and looked at it as I sliced my thumb.

I don't think of myself as STUPID. Just an "Airhead" at times and I'm not even a blonde. lol
