Reducing meds...a little worried

So today Mike had a dr.s appointment with his primary care physician. We didn't really have anything new to report but I did talk extensively about the fact that Mike has very severe motion sickness or what we think is motion sickness. We're not sure if that is all that it is because he gets sick at therapy sometimes and its those times that really worry me because he gets this far off glazed over look in his eyes says his head feels hot and then sure enough he gets sick all over the place. So I was talking to the doctor about the fact that we've tried dramamine, benadryl (dr suggested), meclazine, and now ginger root pills (read about this on the internet) and none have worked....he even got sick today on the way to the doctor, but thats not unusual except that he had had meclazine and ginger root pills and still got sick.....So the doctor looked over Mikes meds and one of them being bromocriptine, decided to reduce this medicine because it has been known to commonly cause nausea. He's cutting it in half. I don't know if anyone else here is familiar with or is taking bromocriptine but it is used as a neuro enhancer in patients with neorological problems and most commonly used in parkinson's patients. It was started at the end of January and I don't know if it was this particular drug or just the passing of time that has made Mike so much more clear thinking so of course I am worried that he may seem to go backwards now. I have noticed that even when Mike is just a hour or so late with his meds that there is a difference in his thinking so I guess I will just have to closely watch how he acts over the next two months (we have another appointment in two months) and let the doctor know, but if it is the bromocriptine that is bringing on this severe motion sickness then I hope we're successful in cutting this medicine down and it still having the effect that it has had on his mental status. I just know that when Mike went to RIC and they started him on this it did seem to really make a difference. The doctor also prescribed a patch for Mike to wear behind his ear for the motion sickness since we've tried everything else. I wonder if we should have tried the patch first before reducing the bromocriptine. I guess I shouldn't worry so much, its not like we can't increase it back to the dose he was on and deal with the motion sickness if I notice that his thinking isn't as clear. I hope this works out.....Oh and he has to start taking lipitor....apparently his cholesterol is a little high. All in all his health has been very good since he's been home, he hasn't even had a cold, so we'll see how this goes and hopefully we won't be dealing with motion sickness anymore, that would be wonderful :-)

Tina,

If you reduce the medication and start the patch at the same time, how will you or the doctor know what helped, if one of them does? Can you put a call into the doctor to find out how long it takes for the patch for the medication to be in his system? If it's right away, wouldn't it make sense to give him a week on the patch to see if it helps the motion sickness before reducing the bromocriptine?

I like Jean's idea...that makes sense...reduce one or add the other...I wouldn't do both because you won't know what caused the change.

Yes I agree it will be to hard to tell which has fixed the problem. The patches generally work within an hour or so, they use them for people who get seasick on boats. They also have little stretchy bracelets with some metal button worn on the wrist for motion sickness.. i dont know if they work or not. but if he goes back on the increased dose, this may be another thing to try.

Good Luck ... Bonnie

I used the bands when i was pregnant with my son...it minimized the nausea to make it tolerable but doesn't eliminate it. Ginger candies worked the same way. I guess if the ginger candies didn't work for them, the bands probably won't either. They may need something stronger.
