Keith has is recently in the process of attempting to walk without using his brace. Although he does not have muscle control in his right foot, we decided to try walking short distances in order to move the muscles in walking motion. Keith has been troubled by confusion lately with has led to anxiety. Working with his doctor, I have asked that we began to try to reduce or eliminate some of the many medications he has been prescribed for depression and anxiety. The side effect of one medication in particular is known to cause confused mental state so that is first on the list. Otherwise Keith has recently spoken at least 5 new words recently, significant or not it is a different experience. The reflex reaction in his right leg continues to be strong. I am not anticipating immediate gains but over time subtle cahnges add up to improvement.

Sounds like Keith is improving, and even small, subtle improvements give so much hope to the survivor and the caregiver. This is, no doubt, a very good thing. My prayer is continued improvement and best wishes to you all.

Ted, my opinion of this is that everybody heals at different paces. Keith is lucky to have you as a caregiver. No matter how long it takes I know that you will be by his side cheering him on. Five years from now, you both will look back in amazement with how much Keith has recovered. This is how recovery usefully works. The stem cell therapy will hopefully make things improve more and quicker. You both are in my prayers.

Good to hear of improvement.. I found at first some improvement was subtle but the more I repeated it the better/easier it became.

Hoping the Best for you. It is GREAT he has some one being an advocate, checking meds and cheering.

Ted:

I was so glad to see your blog about Keith, I know we all want stemcell therapy to be magic pill which brings us back to how we were, but it looks like, you do get those subtle improvements and with lot of Therapy you can build great recovery on those small improvements.

Keith is lucky to have you as partner who is his advocate, wellwisher. you guys will be in my prayers.

This has been an interesting week. We are still in the process of reducing one of Keiths RX called Lyrica. We have reduced to 100 mg down from 150 mg. There have been no negative effects so far, as a matter of fact Keith is less confused and there has been no sign of increased depression. Tomorrow we go to 50mg every other day for one week. This week Keith spontaineously spoke two new words which he can repeat at will. This is different indeed. The word macaroni may not seem much to most people but the fact he hasnt said it in over 3 years is music to my ears. The other was a cuss word when I told him it was snowing.

Repeatabel as well.

Keith was scheduled to receive Botox injections in his arm for spasticity from his rehab Dr. recently but she determined that he didnt appear to need it, at least at the present time. She told me to schedule an appt. if we begin to have trouble with spasticity. That was good news since he had been receiving injections every 3 months. Keith continues to walk without his brace several times each week but as yet is not able to move his toes or control his foot although he seems to have more control of his upper leg from the hip to the knee. Keith has washed a few dishes twice this weekwhile I was at work. Overall, I would say that he is doing just fine. Now I am hoping he will feel like doing a little Cristmas shopping with me since he never wants to leave the house. We will see.
