Well, hello there.

Hieeeeeee! I have an external blog but I figured it might be good to post here, too, where people will intimmately understand the issues we all face. I figured I'd start with some snippets from my other blog and then update as I can.

I had a particularly bad day yesterday. I taught in the morning and then met my mom at Northpark to exchange some shoes. We ran into my SIL and brother who were there for lunch, a very nice surprise. My "brother" is not blood related but we were raised together and have always had that relationship. Our parents are each other's Godparents. Anyway, after my SIL left mom, Tom and I walked around the mall. At one point I started to head toward a glass wall, coming close to crashing into it. I wasn't heading toward it on purpose, mind you, my body was just taking me there in a very spectacular way. My mom finally saw me and came back to hang onto to me to help me back onto the straight path. There were two women walking by who literally stopped and stared.

Why do people do that? I understand that at first, when you see something different you don't mean to stare but it's human nature. But to stop what you're doing and gawk? How do people think that makes us feel? If you're above the age of twenty you should know better. I just don't get it.

We tried to help Tom pick out a tie. I swear, it's odd that we're not related because we are so much alike. He's worse than me when it comes to being picky. That is saying something! He never did find a tie. But hey, I got some great earrings. That's all that matters, right?

Thanks! I have found the same for blogging. I hate to admit it, but writing it down (so to speak) and letting it go for the world to see seems to help a great deal. I guess my mama was right about keeping a journal all those years ago. :laughbounce:

Hi there and welcome to our blog community. Blogging is totally therapeutic - for the writer and the reader alike. Plus it gives us a chance to get further acquainted with each other here on site.

I'm glad your Mom was able to assist you before you crashed into that glass wall. As to those "gawkers", there are times when I feel like a dang fish in the fish bowl. I just try to tune them out as best I can. At least your family are by your side and aren't embarrassed. Before I relocated from Arizona, my mother was embarrassed to be out with me - her loss - I haven't been "perfect" in HER eyes since I had to start wearing glasses as a teenager. The stroke was the icing on the cake so to speak. My daughter is not embarrassed nor is my family in Pennsylvania. I'm not either. Hey, stroke can happen to anyone at any age. Life goes on after stroke and we can't be expected to be couped up and out of sight.

Glad you got pretty earrings - maybe next trip will be more productive for your brother.

Glad your mother caught you before you met the wall.

When I started walking.. without my walker I think I went sideways.. as much as I went forward..

People would kind of look and smile.. a bit quizzical.. I said I want a tee shirt that says.. NO I AM NOT DRUNK... I HAD A STROKE LOL.

I would smile back and keep on.... I was very happy to be walking again. :)

glad you have joined the Blog world here as well

Your mother was embarrassed to be seen with you?? I am so sorry to hear that. My mom has unreasonable expectations of me, but she is never embarrassed of me. I'm glad you were able to move!

Good idea! I claimed St. Patrick's Day for stroke survivors since it's the one day we look "normal."

hi liesl,

blogging is good mental therapy for me. i've been used to writing but rarely wrote about myself. too bad people can't see that since stroke, we are still the same as we were...just different externally. i had a very active life pre stroke, but now i'd rather stay indoors and i do my shopping online. it's nice that you are close to family so they can help you. good luck and i look forward to getting to know you more!

Thanks, Louise! I had an active life, too. I used to be a runner, hiker, workaholic. Eeek!
