Therapy for me

My darling husband stroked August 14, 2007. The doctors did not expect him to make it. He had a massive left hemisphere bleed. When he had a mid-line shift in his brain they said they had some medicine to take the swelling down but did not expect it to work. He was on a vent and feeding tube. He was in CCU for 30 days. Then the miracle I prayed for was answered and he woke up. We moved him to an acute rehab, The Burke Institute in White Plains NY, one of the best in the country. He had therapy 6 hours a day six days a week. He stayed there for five weeks. Then because of insurance he had to be moved to a step down program, which is a skilled nursing facility. He had therapy for 3 hours a day five days a week. He decided to stop therapy after 2 months. I'm not sure why. I have a few ideas, but he as aphasia so i can't know for sure. I think he was in pain, I think he didn't see any progress and decided to stop pt, ot and speech therapy. They put him on anti depressants and waited for him to feel better about therapy. Everyone told him he has to do therapy or he would not get better. We talked and tried everything we could think of, but he just would not do it. The SNF will not force him and I agree with that policy. He holds on to the bed rail if they atempt to put him in his wheelchair. So now he lays in bed and watches TV. He gets in his wheelchair once a week for about 30 min to an hour, but he wants right back in bed. I think he has central pain sydrome. I am writing this as a way to get my thought together and make sense of all that has gone on.

Sharon, welcome to the theurapeutic world of blogging. It is a safe place to put out those feelings that you don't want to tell your neighbours or any but your close friends. It is a place to share with other caregivers the struggle you go through to live as normal a life as possible.

There are a lot of blogs here on all kinds of subjects, from the light-hearted to the down-to-earth. You will learn a lot from reading some of the others blogs as well. Blogworld is is like a small family as we are all well-wishers and support each other here.

I am sure blogging about your daily life with Mickey and what you and he do togther will help to put it all into perspective.

(((Hugs))) from Sue.
