Old Sayings- what was the origin of it?

I like trivia. I like to learn why sayings or expressions come into existance.

"Ruffled my feathers"

"Don't throw the baby out with the bath water." THis one has a long explanation. Back in the 16th century baths were taken in a big tub. Once a year the man of the house had first dibs at the bath, then the other men-folk, then the lady of the house, followed by the children and last but not least, the baby. By that time the water was quite dirty so, the baby evidently did get thrown out with the bath water occasionally.

Why weddings are held in June. Another long explanation. After the long winter and bath, the young people would go courtin' and fall in love. Wedding set in June when body smells hadn't ripened much. But the young bride would carry a bouquet of flowers to mask his aroma. ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Well, if big tub baths started in the 16th century, they were still in style when I came along in 1941. There were many, many old wives's tales and remedies too that I know for a fact they worked for us.

Janice, speaking of trivia, I posted some today in off topic forum you may want to read. Most of them I didn;t know, take a look today!
