Its a Monday I am still recovering from stroke on 11-14-10. I do not know what to do. I want to do something proactive in my life like i used too. I want to go back to work but am realizing that may never happen as it was before though. I am trying to get through the days now. My sleeping pattern is all screwed up from where it used to be. I will be going to the doctor on Wednesday to address this. I went to church this weekend it being palm sunday this all seems to surrreal.

I am also going to probably lose my home for economic reasons.

I cannot take care of such a big yard any more will be one of the positives. But after living here so long it is difficult.

I also do not know if i will be able to pack boxes that long. I am also finding out how tough it will be when the finances start running out.

In the long run will I have to buy moving boxes or go to the grocery store and get them.

How is your day going?

Hey Kevin, you were still asleep at 730 this morning, I know you had to be cause the first line read, I'm still recovering from my stroke on 11-14-10! I do it all the time typing with one finger. I know what you mean but I can't say what you should do.

I think you'll know when your body feels right where you can go to work. I did for 3 years, my body finally quit. Plus it was 2 years after my stroke.

Your stroke hasn't been a year yet. Your body and your endurance will tell you when the time comes for you to work.

Kevin - I can only advise from a caregivers' point of view, but I personally was in the state you are in when I joined this group many months ago. Start with the simple stuff. Set up a daily schedule to include your exercising and any speech you may need to work on. Plan your meals, good, healthy stuff. Bruce's sleeping pattern did not emerge until he was almost 7 months post. Your brain sweling may not be down yet. Rest when you are tired. Try just a week of this - nothing else. Money: write down expenses, look where you can cut. Bruce and I shower at the rehab pool, water bill is down to almost nothing,I save all and any leftovers - good for lunch or adding into soups, stews etc, for example. This has to be looked at over several days and not when you are anxious, tired or trying to juggle too many things at once. Then look at your income and try working out a budget. Make sure your insurance person or social worker has looked into all avenues of income you are entitled to and get any paperwork going on that account. If emotionally you are not ready to think about moving and the huge workload involved there, try cleaning out one closet, drawer, cupboard a day. You are not packing, you are just getting rid of stuff you don't need or don't want. All of this is proactive but also a pain in the neck. Find one thing that is enjoyable: music, books, writing. Sue suggested to me learning a musical instrument, puzzles, brain bafflers, nerf basketball and give yourself some off time with that during each day. Take a walk every day. As everyone here said the first year is the hardest and fortunately Bruce just passed his. Best of luck and let us know how you are doing. Debbie

Kevin,

It hasn't been very long since your stroke, you will have to be patient. The first year is the most difficult. The best advice most of us oldies could give is to rest when you are tired. Your sleeping pattern will come around.

Ethyl has good advice - try to follow it. Take things one day at a time. And this site is probably the best place to get help.

BTW. I have a son named Kevin who turns 50 this year.
