Larry had a productive day

Hi all. Larry had an appt. with his rehab doctor this morning. She said he was doing well. She scheduled another Botox appt. in January. I don't know if Larry is happy about that but it is needed. She also said he could be reinstated for therapy later which I was happy to hear. We then went to the Y where Larry had his membership before the stroke. We met with a trainer who was very personable and very helpful. I could tell some of the folks there were surprised to see him again after all these months and with all the weight loss + using a cane. Larry tried out about 8 different machines he had used and remembered the settings on all of them. Needless to say he was exhausted after this and took a long nap when we got home. We are going to meet with the trainer 3 times to get Larry going and then see how it goes from there. Of course I will be there too to help Larry. Both the trainer and I were amazed at how well Larry did today. All in all a good day.

Julie: thank you for taking the time to update us. I know you too must be exhausted, but I was so looking forward to hearing how everything went for you both. I know the Botox is painful, but Larry will notice the difference. He must have been so pleased to see people he used to work out with and they remembered him. I am glad you are happy with the trainer, will make all the difference and good for Larry! A very nice Christmas gift. Debbie

Julie,

I was curious as to whether the Y provided a trainer or did you have to hire a personal trainer on your own? I need to get Gary back in water therapy after the cold winter months, and had thought about checking out the Y here. The city rec center has personal trainers, but they won't work with him because of his numerous deficits, so I'd have to hire one on my own...something about liability issues.

Sarah: We are paying the trainer in addition to Larry's membership. We are using him for the first three times to get Larry started. Also, I do not know anything about the machines so the trainer can decide which is best for Larry. I thought the fee was reasonable (especially compared to the therapists fees). I would check also with the hospitals in your area that offer rehab to see if you could get him in a program for the pool. Good luck. You certainly have your hands full.

Julie,

This sounds like you are doing well. The person trainer is a good idea to get started. I am glad to hear that Larry is able to walk with a cane and use some of the machines.

I hope to get William in to the machines. I think I will start with the recumbant bike and go from there. Let me know which machines are selected for his use.

Thanks,

Ruth
