Hi my name is goldie

my dad is currently on seroquel for dementia caused by multiple silent strokes, He has had reactions to it but when i mention it too his doc or the specialist they say they are not going to change it becuase it is the cleanest medication for his condition ? I have yet to see anyone else on any of the caregiveing boards mention this medication ( used to treat bi polar ) . I am not sure if i can get them to change it but it makes my dads arm hurt and gives him slured speach and headaches all of which have been reported to the docs

If anyone has any info on this that would be great

Hi Goldie,

WELCOME!

I see you joined us back in November 06, so I'm glad you are being active. I haven't heard of the medicine you are asking about. Some one else here probably has and will let you know.

In the meantime you could do a search in http://www.webmd.com to find information.

Sorry to hear about your dad and the delima it causes for your step mom. I understand your concern so let me say, keep checking back to get answers to your topic.

Somedays I think I've had a silent stroke the doctors can't seem to find the reasons with the many test I've taken in the last couple months. Keep after the doctors until you get answers. Since you are in Canada, the med could be known by another name or generic name in the U.S.

Hi goldie, Not meaning to scare you but here is the information described in the package insert that accompanies the drug. Do not discontinue using the medication until you have spoken wiht the MD. I would show them the information pasted below. This is an FDA warning that requires the drug company to put it in their package insert.

He should not be on this product. I am not sure what they have for alternatives in canada.

Black Box WARNING

1) Quetiapine Fumarate (seroquel)

a) Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with atypical antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death compared to placebo. Analyses of seventeen placebo-controlled trials (modal duration of 10 weeks) in these patients revealed a risk of death in the drug-treated patients of between 1.6 times to 1.7 times that seen in placebo-treated patients. Over the course of a typical 10 week controlled trial, the rate of death in drug-treated patients was about 4.5%, compared to a rate of about 2.6% in the placebo group. Although the causes of death were varied, most of the deaths appeared to be either cardiovascular (eg, heart failure, sudden death) or infectious (eg, pneumonia) in nature. Quetiapine fumarate is not approved for the treatment of patients with dementia-related psychosis (Prod Info SEROQUEL® oral tablets, 2005).

hi idolle

i agree and i have shown that to his doc and to the specialist here and told them repeatedely that i want him on something else . they keep telling me its the cleanest drug available for what he has but i think they are getting my point i have been giveing dad the lowest dose that they keep wanting me to increase and i have refused to increase it at all and told them i want him on something else . I have been calling them every 4th or 5th day to tell them this and i think at dads next doc appmt this week they will be changeing it .. If i thought he would be ok without any i would soo do that but i cant just take him off it :( so im harassreing them till they do and put him on something more apporpreiate for his condition.

Hi Goldie,

Like you, I was looking for someone here who is using or knows someone taking seroquel. my grandmother (84 years-old) just began taking it (for similar reasons as your dad) two days ago (40 mg: for the first four days and 60 mg/day after). too soon for me to tell and judge the efficiency of this med. she was taking lexapro 10mg/day for two months until recently when she showed first symptoms of dementia and intense confusion. i will keep you posted. how is your dad doing? did he switch meds? what was the dosage if you don't mind me asking? how long did he take it for? please let me know if you can.

best best best wishes to you and your dad

sandrine

I know of the warning label and spoke with our doctors. they told us the same thing as your doctor did

hi goldie, and thank you for your reply. could you tell me how much of seroquel your dad is taking a day? also, again if you don't mind: his weight and height (i believe you said your dad is 64?); how long has he been on?

this is just to have a clearer idea in case she develops similar or different symptoms.

my grandmother is 40mg/day first three days. tomorrow we are switching to 60 mg.

height: 5'4"

weight:135 pounds

she is on seroquel since wednesday, april 4th.

thank you

sandrine

thank you goldie. i guess it is not too off considering ages, weights, and heights differences. what do i know? but it gives me an idea and thank you for the advice as far as headaches, pain in the arms, and speech impairment. we will definitely pay attention to all these...

i will definitely let you know how she is getting used to seroquel. in the meantime i wish you and your dad a wonderful week-end.

thank you goldie. i know the webmd.com it is very helpful indeed. My grandmother is not too well today again. I was wondering how long this seroquel took effect on your dad, as far as helping the dementia (and I wonder if it could help her shaking and high blood pressure-new things since today) Did you have to deal with that kind of situation with your dad? Did seroquel helped? When did you start seeing improvements in your dad?

Sorry to drill you with questions. but seeing my grandmother not too well and eventhough her doctor just left our house, i still worry a lot. Have a great week-end to you and your dad.

take good care of yourself,

sandrine
