Finally trying to walk unassisted and It's Working

It will be 8 years on January 15th 2012, since the stroke put me on a cane and a scooter in 2004. My in home health provider is trying her best to help me walk again with no support. It's working and I'm working at it daily in several ways. I'm working with different machines at the senior center to gain strength in the weak leg. Then at home I got things I work with to help even more assisted by my health provider three days a week.

I hope to be more consistent by year's end. Already I gave up my quad cane. I got a light weight single point with a loop to fit the wrist in case I want to shake hands when I meet someone wanting to stop and talk a minute or two. I probably could have started this process much sooner but no one pushed me to start and I never tried myself. Now walking in leather bottom shoes on Sunday makes a difference. I put on my regular tennis shoes after church and I'm back in the groove.

I would love to tell you all in a few more months that I'm walking unassisted. My wife has her bank Christmas party the first or second week of December so I hope to get out on the dance floor and show out. :happydance:. She's not going to want me to go but I'm going anyway...Husbands Rule, right?

Fred! :oohlala:

Congratulations Fred. no more quad, that is a real milestone. When I had the stroke in march/84 I told my family that I was going to dance at my brothers wedding the following August and I did. ok, a slow dance but it was still dancing. My dad had the first dance. What a trip that was. I wish you the same for the party in december. `Good luck to you.

I figure that veteran guy dancing with the stars can do it...I can Too! There will be plenty people to get me off the floor should I fall suddenly! Thanks for your encouragements!!! :happydance:

Way to go, Big Guyhappydance.gif . Which goes to show you must never give up. Also shows me that there is hope for my guy. Keep up the good work and make us all proud.

fred, kudo's to you. thats great news. you are a braver person that i am. i do agree the machines do a much better job at strengthening your leg than just normal exercises. you are working against more resistance with the machines. after my stroke i tried walking with out mine but clung to the walls like glue. i have a very intense fear of falling and breaking something. i havent gotten my confidence up to where you are, yet. i'd rather hang on to it as long as i can. i still have to wear my AF0 too. keep working at it hard and just be careful and hopefully you will be cutting the rug in no time. good luck
