Shoulder Baby Step!

I have done the 'mirror' shoulder shrugs with Bob for months, boosting the stroke shoulder while he shrugged the other one. Today after the PT did major pulling and stretching on his tight shoulder muscles and had him shrug, the stroke one actually moved upward a little bit! Now I don't know if it's because he is getting a little more back on that side or if the reason it didn't shrug before was that it was frozen and she had broken it lose! At any rate, WOO HOO! another small step for mankind... er... Bobkind :)

During his grimacing shoulder stretches, he said in aphasia talk, "“I’ve had about 30 Sesame Streets (therapist) and she’s the best.... but I hate her”.

That is pretty funny what he said but true. It is usually the ones we "hate" that are doing the most to help us. I remember when I first started my therapy they asked me to do the shoulder shrugs and my affected shoulder wouldn't budge. Now when I do it, they both look like they are shrugging the same. Just tell him to keep practicing it several times a day. It is so good to hear that he is making slow but steady progress.

Bob, you might try a muscle stimulator. The VA gave me one it is more than an estim. It masks the pain while you are using it so that you can actually exercise. It then has a deep muscle stim mode that really helps. The first few days I used it the pain immediately returned when I took the thing off. Over the period of a few weeks, the length of pain free time got longer and is now gone.
